Thanks for all the suggestions - we ended up staying in Costa Mesa and ate dinner at the same place both nights in Laguna Beach! I will post a short trip report as soon as I have a few minutes.

If you DO decide to fly, go with US Airways to SNA. That way probably the flight will be cancelled due to mechanical or bad management, and you will save a lot of money staying home.
