Two burning Kaua'i questions
 

1. Is the town the airport is in pronounced "Lee-hoo-ay"?

2. We are orchid lovers...we were disappointed having seen none on our Hana area hikes...now we're going to Kaua'i in June...anyone seen orchids on any Kaua'i hikes?

For me it's all about hanging in Hanalei and beyond.. Sorry no orchid sightings.

Did Maui Kayaks, loved it, although high seas and the dolphins weren't interested. Good people despite the earlier stuff.

We don't have too many wild orchid patches here on Kaua`i, but there are quite a few orchid farms (free tours), as well as some private gardens which offer tours.

Also, this little gem: "Can someone please tell me if three days/three hours/three minutes is too much time on Kauai, I hear there's not much to do there!!!"

Some people don't deserve nature, orchids, OR Donald Duck et al.

Though we love Hawaii, one of the few things that disappointed us was the fact that there were a lot less flowers (in general) than we expected. I thought at first that it might just be the time of year that we traveled there (late March) until we moved on to Tahiti and found that there were many, many more flowers growing there and that while taking the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea we meet a family of native Hawaiians who were in French Polynesia visiting family. They told us THEY were amazed at just how many flowers there were on Tahiti. Though we did not really get back into the hills and see the natural areas of Tahiti (did no hiking) we did find that folks did seem to all have flowers planted around their homes (even really modest houses). I came to the conclusion that Hawaiians really like flowers, but that Tahitians LOVE flowers.

I've seen one wild orchid on Kauai, next to the Kalalau trail.

Try the Big Island (AKA "Orchid Island")-- there are lots of wild ones there, especially in the Kilauea Volcano area.

I think it depends where you are looking for flowers. I remember going to the Fern Grotto on Kauai and sniffing at it, thinking I could see the same in my parents' back yard in Honolulu! HMMMM....maybe I should charge admission to my parents' yard! hee hee.

We too are orchid enthusiasts. Having been to Kauai twice, the only orchids we have seen were roadside nearing Ke'e beach. Believe it or not, Walmart in Lihue had some locally grown orchids and they were quite reasonable. I bought a $4.00 dendrobium variety I had never seen before and kept it as a table decoration during our visit, then brought it home to Texas where it has thrived and always reminds us of our visit. Our visits to the Big Island have been more conducive to seeing orchids in the wild, many in the Volcano Nat'l Park area, roads in the Puna district, and quite a few varieties on the trails at Akaka Falls.

The main thing seems to be soil and certain plant species that are not permitted. The orchid I bought was not in soil, but I still unpotted it and wrapped the roots in moist paper. I did declare it and had no problems. I carried it with me, just storing it overhead on the plane.
