Turnagain Arm area
On what side of the road (north or south or both) are turnoffs for parking cars and viewing the bay? |
Joyce~ did you decide on a car rental, vs. the train ride? One nice thing is our long summer days.. it will be bright until 11-ish, so lots of photo time.
Turnagain Arm is spectacular in summer. J. ** permanent lounge diva ** |
Right now my plan is to do both: take the train from Seward, and then (after returning to Anchorage) rent a car for the rest of my trip. I am planning to drive along Turnagain Arm during one of the days when I have the car.
Are there places on Turnagain Arm where I can turn off the road to park and take in the views? |
Limazulu, are you aware that there are hundreds of us Fodorite's that are "Fodor's Word of Mouth contributors", lol.
Of course none of us have a reason to advertise the fact as we are not in some kind of travel business or if some Fodorite's are they don't advertise their business here as they have read Fodor's rules and know and accept advertising is not permitted. |
JoyceL-
There are plenty of places to pull over and enjoy the views. We drove it on a cloudy day last summer (actually most of the days we were there last summer were cloudy) and the views were great. Monica |
MonicaH,
Are the pullover spots to the north or to the south of the bay? |
As you head south Joyce, they are on your right.. there are just a few smaller turnouts on the left..
it is very apparent as you approach the turnouts.. and as I mentioned previously, many are taking pictures of the sheep on the rocks.. last spring, I was fortunate enough to walk within ten feet of one, and get a photo. If you have time, turn left into Girdwood, off the Seward Highway, for nice alpine scenery.. maybe you can have lunch at Chair 5, the Alyeska Prince Hotel, or a big cajun dinner at The Double Musky after 5 pm (no reservations accepted, so you line up outside). If you aren't concerned with price, The Turnagain House has some nice entrees, halfway between Anchorage and Girdwood. |
The turnouts are on the right side of the road if you are heading south. therefore, it's easy to stop at the turnouts as you drive south than it is on your ton your return trip to Anchorage going north.
|
Get a map, the Seward Highway is on the north side of the Arm, with pull offs on both sides of the road. You can drive to Hope, and get a view from the south side of the Arm.
