Tunnels under Colonial Williamsburg
 

When I was dining in Colonial Williamsburg last weekend, one of the waiters told me that there were tunnels connecting most of the historic buildings which are used to deliver food to the taverns and used by staff to get quickly around the town. I'm very curious whether this is true, since I haven't found anything on the Internet corroborating this tale. I'd very much appreciate it if someone could let me know if this is true. Thanks.

Yes, it's basically true. If you visit the public restrooms below Christiana Campbell's Tavern, you'll see some of the tunnels, which are just hallways and not particularly interesting. (And, of course, the Colonial Parkway runs through a long tunnel beneath the historic area.)

If they had delivery personnel and staff running all around the place, it would destoy the effect of the entire village. there is a lot of behind the scenes work being done all day long. Tunnels would make the entire setup better. So I imagine it's true for just about any place like that.

If you ever get a chance to go behind the scenes at a place like Disney World, take it. It's unbelievable what has to take place to make a place like that run smoothly.

Yes, there are tunnels connecting taverns, etc. Necessary to retain the 18th century atmosphere as much as possible.
