Tulsa tips?
 

Has anyone been to Tulsa? What are your impressions of the outdoor musical? Are there any sites to pay homage to "The Outsiders"? Hotel recs?

I have been to Tulsa a number of times. I'm not sure what outdoor musical you're referring to, or about "The Outsiders" - I travel there on business, so I don't have a lot of down time.

I always stay at the Comfort Suites at 33rd and Memorial, just off I-44. It is practically brand new, a very nice hotel that is clean, quiet, well-appointed, and has a great pool and hot tub area. Honestly, the Comfort Inn chain is not my favorite, but this Comfort Suites is an exception, and is very reasonable. I think about $70/night, depending on the room. At least once a week they have food catered in for a complimentary manager's reception - last time I was there, it was Hooters hotwings and beer.

If you are looking for more upscale lodging, the Rennaisnce Marriott on east 71st is about as upscale as Tulsa gets. I have stayed there once for a special event, and if my work would let me I would stay there every time. It is about $170/night.

I also suggest the Oklahoma Aquarium if you have time. It is on the south side of Tulsa. Google it and you will find their website. It will take you about 2-3 hours to see everything.

I moved here to Tulsa about 8 months ago from San Diego, and it's really a nice little city! What time of year will you be here? If you're here in the springtime, be sure to walk through Woodward Park, which will be in full bloom with shoulder-high azaleas and tulips. The classy Philbrook Museum is located in Woodward Park. Utica Square is an upscale shopping area just down the street. There is also a beautiful park that starts just south of downtown that runs several miles alongside the river. It's great for jogging, walking, and biking.

I haven't been inside the new Renaissance, but it is supposed to be very nice. If budget allows, be sure to check out McBirney Mansion in residential Midtown, a charming area just south of downtown. It would be more personalized with nicer surroundings than the Renaissance.

I've been to Discoveryland, but it was a long time ago (i.e., more than 10 years ago). I saw "Oklahoma," which was pretty good but to me seemed like really good community theater, not professional, off-Broadway quality. Perhaps part of that is the style of acting necessary to play the outdoor arena, or just playing to the audience. Still, it's a fun evening, and I had a good time. I'd recommend you try to get up to Bartlesville to see the Price Tower (you might spend a night in the Inn at the Price Tower) and to see Woolaroc. I like the Gilcrease Museum, but I think I like Philbrook more, particularly the gardens.

I've never seen any sites even acknowledging the Outsiders, and I don't even know if the movie was filmed there.

My aunt and uncle live there. It's a nice place. I was surprised how hilly it is. The geography, not the night life, reminds me a little of Austin. I have never found that much to do there, but that may be a function of my visits being with family.

Doug's right. The outdoor musical is the quality of good community theater, yet, it is a fun time.

Other than teenagers reading the book for english lit, not that many people in Tulsa remember that the city is the subject of the book and the author is from there.

I get to Tulsa for a convention about once a year. I have a good enough time there, but not so much that I would be likely to go there at some other time.

I usually stay at the Sheraton Tulsa. Nothing to write home about, but not bad.
