true laua experience?

Going to Maui and Oahu soon. Where would I experience the most authentic, true lauas (not glitzy) on these islands? Looking for maybe something on the beach if possible.

The Old Lahaina Luau on Maui is supposed to be the most authentic (was also rated the best luau on the islands by the Travel Channel). We enjoyed it when we were there last Sept.

I've been to them all and the Old Lahaina Luau is far and away the best of them.

I third Old Lahaina Luau! Make reservations before you leave...It's often sold out.

On Oahu you will find very authentic Asian food high and low end. I would go to Alan Wongs (High end and fused with contemporary western food) and then on another night Legends Seafood great Chinese. You could have fun at the luaus on Oahu but they are very commercial.

I'm with Sarah, except that I'd go a bit further and say, "Don't bother." Luaus are very expensive to the point of being ridiculous, and when you get down to it, it's no big deal. We each have our own priorities, but I've never been able to justify the huge expense for something that didn't especially thrill me. But maybe you have to go to one to realize this, so if you must, head for the Old Lahaina on Maui.
