Trout fishing
Trying to plan a long weekend fishing trip, 3 to 4 hour drive from the Bay Area.
We rented a houseboat last year on Shasta Lake, which was a blast but want to try something different this year. Any recommendations for cabin accommodations right on a good trout fishing lake with nearby hiking trails? We would also need to rent a fishing boat. Thank you. |
My friends who fish rave about Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake. (not so what kind of fish they catch) Both lakes have cabin rental available. Bass Lake, near Yosemite, looks really pretty too.

Bass Lake is beautiful but the lake fishing is not very good. We camped one year at Huntington and had excellent trout fishing in the lake. The water is VERY cold. Don't know about hiking, it's pretty high in the mountains, 7000 feet or so, and the pine forest is gorgeous. It seems to me that Lake Florence is a bit farther down the road, and while it also has good lake fishing, I don't recall any cabin rentals.
There are some little bitty lakes scattered about in the high country that are LOADED with trout! |
Just another thought - it's too bad that it is so darn far from the Bay Area to the eastern Sierras, because the fishing is better over there!

Thank you, lvk and gigib. I will check out Huntington and Shaver lakes.
Yes, I was originally thinking of Convict Lake in the Sierras but you're right, I think that's too far for a 3-day weekend. I'm also looking into Echo Lake, Bucks Lake and Sardine Lakes. Any info on those lakes would be much appreciated. This would be for the weekend of June 22 and I know rooms book fast. In fact, I thought I read somewhere that Sardine Lakes has a 10-year waiting list! Could that really be? |
