Tropical weather
 

Not to make everyone nervous, but there is a minimal hurricane forecast to pass just south of the big island of hawaii on labor day. It looks like it will miss, but after what hurricane iniki did to Kauai in 1992, everyones a bit nervous.

Are you talking about tropical storm (not a hurricane) Jimena? From what I can find, it looks like Jimena will pass close to the Big Island but even if it hits the Big Island it does not appear to have the potential to do any damage.

It looks like you might be in Hawaii and if so maybe you have better information on this storm.

We knew someone who moved to Kauai about 1 week before INiki. Fortunately for them their house was just being built but it was a devastating hurricane. Since I live in the Atlantic hurricane area I keep track of things on the NOAA site. It is the source of information that all the weather groups use so you might as well go to the source. They have info on Pacific storms as well of course.

I have not heard one person mention approaching Jimena. So far it has just been a buried footnote on the local TV weather report.

Latest update. Hurricane Jimena is a cat 2 hurricane. It is forecasted to pass south of Hawaii on labor day. It may be within 100 miles of south point of the big island of Hawaii. Too close for comfort. The Big Island may feel some effects of the storm, especially from the surf and rain. All you Kona vacationers watch this one closely. Kona's lack of offshore reefs make it prone to damage from high surf.

koa, are you a meteorologist? The forecast for the Big Island is cloudy with showers right through to next Wednesday. There are no weather watches, warnings, or advisories in effect.

For current information on tracking the storm www.accuweather.com , click on "window of movement" shows dates and times where the storm will be traveling, as accurate as it can be.

Not a meterologists, but I do have an interest in weather as I surf a lot. Currently there are no warnings because the storm is a good 900 miles away, but Im sure a high surf warning will be issued by sunday. Latest forecast is the storm will continue west. This will keep the strong winds well away from hawaii.

In the eastern Pacific, Jimena, moving west at 17 mph, is a hurricane with 100 mph sustained winds. Jimena strengthened overnight and at one point an eye was visible on infra-red satellite imagery. Currently, the storm is about 950 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii and intensification has seemed to level off. By early next week, Jimena may be located just south of the Big Island of Hawaii as a Cat 1 hurricane or a strong tropical storm. This storm will be monitored closely as it ventures closer to Hawaii. The main impact at this time will be high surf along the the southern facing islands of Hawaii.

So far so good, but these things can change course as Kauai folks found out in 1992...

Okay, heres the latest as of 900am HST. Hurricane Jimena will be a cat 1 hurricane travelling on a westerly course. It will pass around 70 miles of the big island. Tropical storm warnings and a hurricane watch is in effect for that island. It seems the other islands will see very little from jimena.

Cat 1 hurricane, 70 miles south of you, will not have a big impact at all, as long as you are not swimming in the surf.

Just an update. Hurricane Jimena was downgraded to a tropical storm. Only the south and east side of Hawaii island got weather out of it. Hawaii dodged the bullet again.
