Trip to the Adirondacks

I originally posted this topic under the title "Camping in the Adirondacks" but since we are not set on camping (we are open to any type of accommodations) I thought I should repost under the title "Trip to the Adirondacks".

My husband and I are interested in visiting the Adirondack region in early September for 5-6 days. We enjoy the mountains, hiking, road trips, and of course the lakes. Ideally, it would be great to find a place to use as a base where we can visit both mountain areas and also lake areas.

Do you know of an area in the region that would be a point where we could go and do both? We are not picky about whether it is a camping area, a lodge, a cabin, a B&B, or a resort hotel.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

well I'm prejudiced as my family has been going to Saranac for over 100 years, but although the town is small, it is so beautiful and near both great hiking and lakes. Placid is a bit bigger, but has more restaurants and hotels so more options. Blue Mountain Lake is a bit to the south so easier to get to, and I love the museum there. Happy trails

Thanks for your post. Do you have any suggestions on lodging in Saranac?

The Saranac Lake region is my favorite too. You are close to Lake Placid, loads of great lakes for canoeing, plenty of hiking trails. The town of Long Lake is also a good spot to use as a base for seeing more of the Adk's. There are a couple of nice inn's and cabins to rent right on the lake.

We rented this and have friends that did also. It is walkable to town with great places to eat, whitewater rafting, hiking, the train to Saratoga if you so desire.

The scenic train to/from North Creek to Saratoga is ok, but a long ride at 2 or 2.5 hrs each way. The drive is an easy 1hr...

If you do take the train I recommend you get a seat in the dining car - you are on the upper level so you can look out the top windows - not just watch the trees pass by at ground level.

I've done the RR one way from Saratoga to North Creek and ridden a bike back. It was an ok trip with a group of friends, but not something I'd rush to sign up for again.

we alway stay at our family's cottage - but check out this link - it seems to list the saranac options. You can probably also find a lot of private rentals - try VBRO.
