trip to sonoma, geyserville, ferndale and gold beach

My significant other and I plan to drive next week in northern CA and southern Ore., staying overnight in Sonoma, Ferndale, Gold beach and Geyserville, largely driving up 101. I've heard there are wonderful redwood forests to view. Can you suggest any particular favorite drives? Are there any restaurants you would recommend? thx

You'll first come to the Avenue of the giants on your way north from Sonoam to Ferndale. It is just off and runs for about 30 miles parallel to 101 and is a must.

There are several exits off/on to 101 but its really best to do the entire drive if you have the time. Count on 2.5 to 3 hours depending on on how many times you stop. One time I spent almost the entire day but figure on at least 2.5 hours. I'd take a picnic lunch and eat along the Avenue.

Then farther north after you leave Ferndale there are lots of options. Besides terrific Redwoods, Prairie Creek has the Roosevelt elk and the absolutely stunning Fern Canyon. I'd also hit Humboldt Redwoods State Park which abuts the Avenue of the Giants west of 101. With those two you could easily pass on Redwoods National Park as a special stop though you will drive through it.

Several fun places to eat in Ferndale (though not sure if all have survived the last two years)

Definitely try the Samoa Cookhouse just across the water from Eureka. https://www.samoacookhouse.net

"Besides terrific Redwoods, Prairie Creek has the Roosevelt elk . . ." not sure where I was going with the 'Besides' bit. Looks like I left something out . . . but really just meant to recommend Prairie Creek and Humboldt SPs . . .

From the Avenue of the Giants continue to the Rockefeller Grove and on to Honeydew, The views of the Pacific between Honeydew and Ferndale are impressive.

If you like basketry don't miss the Clarke Historical Museum in Eureka:

Healdsburg is really cute, if you have time.
