Trip to New York - stopover options
Hi there,
I'm about to book my trip to NY and I wanted some advice on my stop over options.
I will be travelling in early Feb.
Now I'm travelling on FF points and so my options are limited to the cities my carrier flies into - the stopover would be on the return journey for approximately 3 days.
Option 1 LA
Option 2 San Francisco
Option 3 Honolulu
I'm leaning towards option 2 at this stage as I've never been there and I'm not much of a beach bum - however would be interested in opinions and some ideas of things to do in each city that don't involve vast amounts of travel or effort. I am a female, lone traveller in my early 40's. I am on a budget of around US$100+ a day (accommodation already paid for) so would like to get the most out of my $$$$'s.

Danielle, could you fill us in on some details like how long you'll be stopping? Do you have to stop in the same place in both directions? Are you coming from Oz?
In the absence of other info, I'd nix LA since it really requires renting a car. San Francisco is easy on public transportation. A ride around on the cable cars, a visit to a museum, a ferry to Sausalito, a visit to Chinatown...Chinese NY is in Feb.

Hi Mclaurie - thanks for your response and I think you've confirmed SF for me. I did mention in my OP that I would be looking at about 3 days. I really do have to stop in the same place in both directions as I'm travelling on FF points my options are somewhat limited. Do you think 3 days are enough to do SF justice. My interests mostly lie in architecture, history and scenery (city scenery)! Someone suggested a trip to Sausalito would be worthwhile - would I have enough time?

I did San Francisco in 3 days and saw almost everything I wanted to see. If you click on my name and scroll down to around post 47 you can see my trip report of what I did and managed in the time I had. I haven't been to the other two, but I would highly recommend SF.

I don't think you have to stop in the same place in both directions. We used FF miles to go from NYC to Hawaii some years back and stopped in different places in each direction, SF on the way home.
You can absolutely see enough of SF in 3 days to get a flavor. If you notice, I also suggested Sausalito. Unfortunately the restaurant I liked to go is now closed, but their website says you can take a picnic.

I think I would probably opt for another restaurant.
