Trip to Florida questions

I have a free Southwest travel voucher and am thinking of going to Miami (never been). I would land in Ft Lauderdale, then stay in the Penguin Hotel or the President Hotel in South Beach. I also want to explore the Keys. Do you think this is a good trip? I'm coming from CA so I lose one day going/coming. Any advice is appreciated.

Caroline, how much time do you have to spend in Florida not counting the days you're flying back and forth? The drive from Miami to Key West is about 4 hours. It's definitely worth it if you have the time. If that's not possible there's plenty to see and do in the Miami area.

I have 5-7 days in Florida. My concern is that I will spend too much time driving... I land in Ft Lauderdale, then I drive to Miami, hang out for a few days, then I'll drive to the Keys, hang out for a few days, then I'd drive back to Ft Lauderdale to go home. Man, that's exhausting just typing it! Do you think this is too much to cram in a one week time period?

this doesn't sound too much to me. The drive in the Keys is part of the vacation , lots to enjoy on the drive.
I consider the drive back as part of my return home, so I rest on the plane and when home!

Fly into FLL or Miami, but drive directly to the Keys and relax there. It's much more laid back than Miami. You can find plenty to do without all that driving.

I think you can do it and enjoy it at the same time...there are plenty of stops along the way...if you're staying in Old Town in Key West or someplace near it, you won't have to drive for awhile...two of my favorite restaurants in Key West are Blue Heaven and El Siboney...very casual and fun.
