Trip to Detroit museums

Would like to visit the Diego Rivera murals at the DIA, Henry Ford Museum, Springfield Village, the Rouge Plant, and the Edsel Ford Home. I would like to know at what hotel or motel we shoudl stay which is convenient to these places Some driving is fine . We would like a moderately priced accomodation and hope to avoid parking fees as we will have a rental car. My wife is concerned about this trip and I would like to know how to avoid the more unhappy areas of Detroit...

Since I live in the Detroit area I never stay at the hotels but the website for the Henry Ford offers some hotel suggestions:

By the way, it's Greenfield Village not Springfield Village.

Enjoy your trip!

How much time will you have? You may not be awear of how much time it will take to tour the museum and village. They are huge. The musuem is the size of the Smithsonian Museums and you could easily spend a day in Greenfield Village.

Of the hotels suggested on The Henry Ford site, I would stick to the Hyatt or The Henry. I believe that The Henry was a Ritz Carlton hotel in the recent past. Both are in the parking lot of a shopping mall just around the corner from The Henry Ford. I believe that the Rouge plant is also on that side of town so these may be your best options. If you stayed in Detroit by the water you would be driving back to Dearborn to see 3 out of the 5 attractions.

You could see the DIA and the Edsel Ford Home on the same day. Another suggestion is the Pewabic Pottery Museum. It is very near the Edsel Ford Home.

Keith is correct, there is a lot to see at The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.

Have not been, but there are apparently some worthy attractions in Detroit itself. One list:

The Dearborn Inn, right next to The Henry Ford/Greenfield Village is a wonderful place to stay; I live in the metro area but have stayed there twice and would go back in a minute!

Other info: The Rouge Factory tour leaves from the museum/village. The drive to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford house is not that far. While in Dearborn, a visit to Fairlane, Henry Ford's home (not the mall), is also worth it. Since he was very good friends with Thomas Edison so there are lots of cool things to see that were very innovative at the time - some even now.

I would stay at the Dearborn Inn. It is lovely and I think reasonable rates can be had. I think it is the perfect choice for your visit to Detroit.
