Most California don't use or like the term Cali, hence they are often considered to be tourists or newcomers. Hence turista (Spanish for tourist) gringo kinda slang for non local.

Bedar Sep 15th, 2017 10:30 AM

Ah, the rapper is from Queens. That explains it. Is just another of T's rubes !

MmePerdu Sep 15th, 2017 11:01 AM

Thanks for explaining, Nanabee. Good to know I'm neither of those, only guilty of old & white, neither of which I can do anything about.

Cali? I clicked on this post and was surprised to see it is about visiting California, not Columbia. As a 60 year old native of San Francisco, I never hear my state called this.

While I am being persnickety, San Fran and Frisco are like nails on a chalkboard.

OK, rant over.

We really do welcome visitors!

The OP is now contemplating jumping from that big bridge in Frisco.

Another long time Californian here, so thanks for the persnickety rant. Cali, Frisch, San Fran, all nails on the chalkboard of my mind.

And having said that, just yesterday I saw a SouthWest sale ad offering low, low fares to Cali. Yes. Wonder how old the ad writers are?

Bedar Sep 17th, 2017 08:03 AM

Awful. Oh well, SW Air is a cheapo airline. Guess they're also cheap with the number of letters they use. Yet another reason not to fly with them !

nanabee Sep 17th, 2017 05:40 PM

haha! Bedar!!!

I prefer SW Air personally. How dare they call it Cali though. So rude.

MmePerdu Sep 17th, 2017 05:45 PM

"How dare they call it Cali..."

Apparently going for the hipster trade who seem to have never heard of California.

Bedar Sep 18th, 2017 06:00 AM

Where can we write to complain ?

suze Sep 18th, 2017 10:18 AM

I say San Fran is at least better than Frisco!

"Cali" no way Jose.

It's funny, ever since I've seen this post I have heard a number of people calling California "Cali," even in a couple of ads, which I don't remember. Maybe it's gaining momentum with young people. Don't know. I was just in a conversation with some people on how crazy California can be, and one said, "You just never know what's going to happen in Cali." FYI, she was on the young side (although with me, most people are on the young side).

Back in 2015, the Long Beach Press Telegram even had a story on it...so have fun in "Cali" (:

As a primarily Southern California girl, I was entrenched in the "never call California Cali" cult. But in the last few years, hearing my cousins from Delaware, with their Delaware accent, say, "Hey Cuz, we're comin' to Cali", it actually started to grow on me. I think because the accent made it seem OK. And made me laugh. Laughing is a good thing these days.

That said, ever since my son went to Cal, I thought perhaps "Cal" might be a good nickname for California. After all, 4 syllables IS really long. And the 1 syllable "Cal" kind of works as well as promotes our public universities!

After all, we DO say "Nor Cal" and "So Cal" . . . so why not just plain "Cal" for the entire state?!?

I'd love to be acquainted with LL Cool J, actually.

When adults pick up on a word fad, it's a sure sign the term is on its way out.

1. Son & family have been in Cali for twenty years, and I love the term, and I am old (70)

2. Two days in Big Sur/Monterey and two in Sonoma is spread too thin, pick one or the other

3. How did LL Cool J get involved in this post?

4. Southwest is no cheapo airline, we surely love it well above United, American or Delta and have flown it lots of times while living in TX and also now that we're back in Jersey. Son & family love to fly it from San Diego when they come East.

The OP registered in Sept, started the thread and disappeared. I seriously doubt she is still lurking.

MmePerdu Nov 25th, 2017 08:38 PM

1. Twenty years? Is that meant to be a long time?

2. I'm happy the newcomers are happy and fortunately silly lazy new names for places rarely last long.

3. My family arrived during the Gold Rush (1850) and I heartily dislike the term and any other that messes with a beautiful place name. Respect comes in many forms.

4. I was born in California 72 years ago and don't feel old, sorry you do aliced. Today, Saturday, i plan to spend an anniversary on a felucca on the Nile here in Aswan.
