Trip to Arches over Labor Day

My wife and I will be in Moab over Labor Day weekend. I would like to take the 3 hour ranger led tour of the Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park but my wife read that this tour has narrow ledges and she is somewhat afraid of heights. Has anyone been on this tour before? Is it kind of dangerous? Thanks for all of your input.

Hi C,

The Firey Furnace is a great hike, not dangerous. There is one place where you have to walk on a rock ledge, but it's not that narrow. Then you jump across an approximately foot wide gap. Some stepping up, over, around, under rocks. One spot where it's a narrow squeeze. Significantly overweight people would not make it, nor would they enjoy the rest of the hike. If you are in reasonable shape, you're good to go!

it's such a scenic hike i would definitely not miss it! i am also afraid of heights but there wasn't anything i didn't want to do. squeezing thru the small arches and narrow walls is half the fun.

have a great time!

If the park is crowded on labor day, try out the Tower Arch hike which is in a lesser visited area of the park. It was one of the highlights of our last trip. We didn't see anyone during the hike and there are no height issues.

Thanks for the info. My wife has now been reassured and we are planning on taking this hike.
