Awwww....what a nice thing to do. I'm so glad you had the experience. He may not have been the best president we've ever had, but he may be the best human being who has ever served as president. I really admire him for doing what he does (as opposed to the golf and speech circuit.) I've thought that if I was ever alone in the world (suddenly widowed, or whatever), I'd go to the Carter Center and say "Put me to work."

You have just brought tears to my eyes. Not only am I touched by your visit to Plains, I love the fact that it was on your "to do" list. I just visited the Great Smoky Mountains this summer to see the synchronized fireflies. It has been on my "to do" list for sometime. It was everything I hoped it would be. Your trip to Plains reminds me that it is the little things in life that matter. Thanks for sharing!

starrs, Thanks so much for posting this. This has been on my to do list for years, but I've never gotten in gear and actually done it. I've been on the website and reviewed the "rules," etc. I have no excuse as I live within 2 hours of Plains!

Oh, and don't ya just love the Windsor hotel? We hosted my mother's 70th birthday luncheon there several years ago as it was centrally located for out of town guests. It was so lovely. My best friend also had her rehearsal dinner there. Thanks for reminding me of the good memories of the Windsor.

I will make myself go to church in Plains after football season.

Yep, I've enjoyed the Windsor. We've had a family wedding rehearsal dinner there and I've done some work events there. Not many places like it anymore - and the people are really nice.

DO go to hear JC teach Sunday School. I think you will really enjoy it. And, be sure to eat at Mom's Kitchen after church.

starrs,

Thanks for posting. I've always admired the Carters. They seem to be genuinely decent people who truly care about others.

smoot60,

I'd never heard about the synchronized fireflies but googled it and found a lot of info. This is now on my "to do" list. Thanks.

My dear Dad, southern Democrat to the core, loved JimmyC, and had a life sized cutout of Bubba Clinton (gift from me!). He and Mom went to Plains for a Sunday service and were overwhelmed by the message that Jimmy taught. This was something they talked about till they could really talk no longer.

sfmaster, thank you for bookmarking this so I could see it. I missed it the first time.

What a wonderful experience. I hope I have the opportunity to do this some day. I love Mr. Jimmy and agree with the poster who said he may not have been the best president, but he was the best man who served as president. His life inspires me.

Carter is truly a model of how an ex-president should live his life. Maybe he wasn't so successful as a president, but, as an ex-president he has been.

starrs:

I missed this when you posted back in 08 - such fun to read. I'd love to attend one of his bible classes.

Thank you.

I also just realized this is an old post, but how neat. Our church was working on a Habitat house many years ago and President Carter came to work on it also. I have a picture of him on a break (he WORKED) sitting in a lawn chair--the knees of his jeans were completely ragged. I thought that told the whole story.

I listened to his press conference today from the Carter Center. He said he would be back in Plains this Sunday, teaching Sunday school. I plan to go sometime soon. He usually teaches three Sundays each month. I hope that schedule can continue for a long time.

The current schedule -
