Trip Report to NYC/The Good and the Bad
My Daughter and I recently stayed for 4 nights at the On The Ave, very friendly staff, nice room with 2 double beds (room 1013), TV had terrible reception (they said they were having cable problems) and althought the water was hot, no water pressure. Location was great close to subway, etc. We enjoy browsing thru Zabar's (ate breakfast there one morning) and Fairways. The other mornings we had breakfast at Balthazar (our favorite)and Le Pain Quotient. We went shopping in Soho (started snowing) then finished the day at Rockefeller Center. We were tired so grabbed a sandwich and soup at Manhattan Diner (it was good). The next day we took the subway to Little Italy and China Town (shopped at Pearl River) ate a slice of pizza at Ray's. We also had dessert at La Bella Ferrara (cannoli and eclairs). We went to Radio City that night and it was very good (a delightful Christmas story). My daughter wanted to go to Carmine's, where we had spaghetti and meatballs (very loud and very crowded). We had so much food we brought back the rest to the hotel staff. One day we had lunch at The Hummus Place (very good hummus and pita bread) a unique place to eat. The next day we went to the Columbus Circle for the Holiday Market. We went last year and bought 95% of our christmas gifts. We like that the gifts are unique and most of them handmade. One of a kind items we cannot find at the mall. My daughter bought all her friends gifts there. We went to Levian Bakery (chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies-the best), had a hotdog at Gray's Papaya, ate chocolates from Kee's. This is the 3rd christmas trip my daughter and I have had there and we love it. She especially loves NYC at Christmas and it gives us time together doing what we love most shopping and eating. We took the subway most of the time (safe and cheap and we enjoy the entertainment). We had problems with cabs (trying to find one) and also we noticed this time when we paid with cash they would return our change minus their tip. The credit card machines in the cab never worked and in general they are rude. We also had trouble at LaGuardia with luggage. We both had small carry-on luggage and small makeup bags + our purses. We never have trouble anywhere other than Laguardia with this. They told us we would have to check our luggage/we are only allowed 2 things including our purses(what purse isn't big anymore). I don't understand the same luggage I leave DFW with cannot be brought back from NYC. People were furious at the airport with this issue. My daughter and I were stopped and pulled aside to ask what was the initial next to our first name. It is of course our middle name and initial. When I asked the flight attendant on our flight, she replied employees at LaGuardia had their own agenda. I just with they would make the same rules at all the airports so it would not be so confusing.

I'm surprised you can get on a plane anywhere with 3 items. Eveywhre I fly it's a definite 1 small carry-on and 1 personal item. No airport allows more. And, esp in europe - the carry-on has to meet very strict size standards.
I don't think it's LGA that's out of step - I think it's your departure airport.

The rules at airports clearly state 1 carry-on plus 1 personal item. Its really the fault of your departing airport for letting you on with 2 carry-ons plus the personal item.
For cabs, I always try to hand them the exact amount + tip to avoid the potential embarassing situation of telling him to give more money back, etc.
Glad you had a fun trip

You should have carried a backpack instead of purse and makeup bag. You could have put makeup bag and purse inside backpack and as long as it can fit under the seat in front of you, the airlines will not say anything.

I carry a fold up bag for this very purpose. It looks like one of the new grocery store bags, but is about 3 times the size.
If I end up taking home more stuff than will fit in my normal checked and carry-on bags, I can put my purse and the other stuff together in it. Voila! One carry-on, plus one very big purse!

<< when we paid with cash they would return our change minus their tip.<<
This has never happened to me and I only pay in cash. First, I do the math in my head and when I hand the driver the money, I tell them what I want back. A tip, while customary, is discretionary and you decide what that amount is - not the other way around.
