Trip Report: Orcas Island and Just A Teeny Bit Of Seattle
#21
<<We did not have one instance of a rude or crabby person anywhere! Are they just not allowed in Washington?>>
That's correct (just kidding). But we are awful polite and helpful in these parts, aren't we? Truly, thanks for the wonderful and detailed trip report.
Regards, Suze in Seattle

Your report made me sad and glad at the same time. We have been going to Beach Haven since the 60's and my children, and now their children remember it with fondness. We love the P. Northwest and would not live anywhere else. But be cautioned that the weather, while incredible in the summer, can be tiresome for the uninitiated...lots of dark and dreary days, rain, more rain, etc. If you come again, explore the Olympic Penn. Still very primitive and unspoiled, lots of hiking trails, ocean beaches, and rain forest. We just returned from camping at Ft. Worden St. Park, getting there on the ferry. Met a couple from N. Dakota who were on the deck of the ferry in shirt sleeves, literally freezing. She said, ' we must come back to visit sometime in the 'summer'". I replied, 'this is the summer'. She was astounded. Anyway, come to our world again, just don't move here...getting too crowded (only kidding).

ahhhh.. you have also aroused memories of many years past when i first saw an aerial photo of a gorgeous retreat on the cover of national geographic travel magazine!
i opened it up to find where this gorgeous place was!
it was rosario resort on orcas island.
way beyond our normal budget, but i vowed we had to stay two nights there on our special anniversary get-away to the P.Northwest.
we fell in love with the entire area, and spent the following 8 years going back and forth to british columbia and the san juans.
in fact, one of our friends heard us talk so much about the area,.. they went to visit, (looking for a retirement home) and ended up buyng a house on bainbridge island several HOURS later!
i sit here and think that it has been far too long since we were there last. your description brings back fond images of scenic solitude, and i can even hear the water lapping against the pebbles as i pull my tennis-clad feet back so they don't get wet.

Aren't banana slugs awful!? The trip report and photos were great, thank you for sharing.
Only 18 days before I head "home" for a visit. I always love my trips to the PNW with so much family sometimes I don't have time to fit in a trip to the Mountain (Rainier, is there any other?) or even downtown Seattle! Your beautiful trip report has made me determined to get in at least one hike.
