trip report
We had a wonderful time and cant wait to go back. As we arrived at the hotel, the Marriott Marquis, I was shocked at how different it was. It was beautiful but so different from the last time I was there or so I thought. I kept telling my friend how different it was and that it was even in a different place. Turns out I booked rooms at a different hotel than I thought. I thought we were staying at the Renaissance.
That explains alot. I couldnt understand why you all complained about the elevators since we had no problems the last time. HAHA The room we had was wonderful. quite large and on the 42nd floor. The elevators were interesting. Only once did we wait more than 5-7 minutes. People did squish in. Our first day there we checked in and got to our room by 12 noon. We took the subway to Fulton Street and walked to the seaport to get tickets at TKTS booth. We waited in a line behind 2 people and got tickets to the Producers for that night. Much less surcharge $3 than the broadway box offers. We decided to check out the water taxi for a ride to Brooklyn. Website was not accurate thank goodness. We waited 3 minutes for the water taxi and were on the way to Brooklyn. First stop was ice cream as Patrick had suggested. Strawberry was delicious and one scoop was the perfect appetizer to get us to Grimaldi's. Directions from fodorites were great. Pizza was awesome and at 1:30 on Thurs we had no wait. Could not find the Jacques chocolate. We asked and they gave us the same directions we had but the Water Street we went on was only one block. That's ok we certainly didn't need the calories. Brooklyn Bridge was great. A little warm but good. We went back to the room and changed for the play. The producers was top notch. A wonderful show and so well done. Dinner at the Broadway Bar in the hotel. Long day but wonderful. Early start to hear the beach boys at the today show. Too crowded and hot inside the barriers so we sat in front of rockefeller center. Could hear well, were able to sit in the shade and enjoy the farmers market. Talked to another friendly local who happened to be a tour agent. Good tips and infor. Headed uptown on a bus to go to a few thrift shops. Also walked the streets and looked at the homes and enjoyed the neighborhood. Going back downtown, I remembered frozen hot chocolate. It didn't open till 11_30 am but it was worth the wait. No reservations but we got seated. They told us that reservations must be made 2 weeks in advance. Walked to find the F subway. That is not the easiest train to find. We went to the Tenement Museum. It was moving and interesting. Someone was right when they said neat was not a good description. The only bad thing was that our reservation had been recorded incorrectly and we did not get to the piecing it together show. Instead we saw the Confino tour. It was excellent but I wish we had done the other tour first. Back on the bus and we had the most wonderful helpful bus driver. Back to get more tickets. this time Glengarry Glen Ross It is very hot so we stop for a drink at Bubba Gump Shrimp and have a drink and shrimp cocktail. Great bartender fun to watch and talk to. The play was so well done and we enjoyed it. Although the seats were not too comfy. Late dinner. Saturday is time to shop and go home. Since it was going to be 110 heat index we decided to do air conditioned stores. Left Penn Station on the train. We were alittle unnerved that they did not announce our gate until 8 minutes before the train left, There were alot of people there and would have been easier to go to the gate earlier but it all worked out. It was a fabulous trip and we used so much of the info we gained over the last few weeks from all of you. I can't wait to return. OOur next trip we would like to see more of the neighborhoods and the MoMA. Thanks again to all of you. Have a great summer |
Hello poolqueen, sounds like you had a good time. Funny story about the hotel being different than you thought you booked. Senior moment?
Just as a heads-up on posting a trip report, it might be helpful to include the city you visited in your title and first couple sentences. It took me until you mentioned Brooklyn to know where you went. |
Glad you had a good time!
For future reference, for those wanting to go to Jacques Torres Chocolates: While on the ferry landing, standing with your back towards Manhattan, walk straight ahead past the Ice Cream Factory until you hit the street. Water Street will be directly to your left. Walk Water Street for about 2 blocks (the left side of it is lined with seemingly abandoned brick warehouses) and Jacques Torres will be the first store you see, on the right. |
Suzanne,
we did that. The street said do not enter for traffic and a man told us to walk there but we still didnt see it. We will try again on our next trip. thanks |
I never believed you'd actually do the strawberry ice cream "appetizer" for Grimaldi's Pizza as I suggested. Good for you!
