trip repor 5th-8th October

We wanted to see the fall colors and had made reservations a few months back at Aspen for 2 nights and kept one night flexible. Based on all the reports coming in we knew we were late.

We reached Denver airport after noon on the 5th.After picking up the car from hertz we left for Montrose. The aspen trees were bare in Frisco,Breck and Vail.

Forecast was for snow on 5th night. On 6th morning we left for Dallas divide. Surprised to see a number of photographers near the RL ranch. Withe the sun out got some good shots of the range and left for Million Dollar Highway. A lady at the gas station advised us to be very careful as the roads were icy.Drove 12 miles along the highway.Very scenic. Turned back and proceeded to Aspen.

The route was via Gunnison. Got some lovely photos of the foliage with snow.

Foliage in and around the town was decent.Next morning(7th) drove to Maroon Bells for the sunrise.

Clear sky and with snow covered peaks and some aspen made our day.During the day we drove over independence pass.At night went back to Maroon Bells to photograph the stars and milky way.

On 8th morning left for Denver to catch the flight for Milwaukee.

Will come back later during September to see the fall colors.

Did you post your photos anywhere?

Thanks for reporting. I was wondering if you posted photos somewhere too.

Yes, late September usually has better odds for color, but it's hard to predict around here.

Great shots, thanks for the link. Yep, definitely looked like winter as much as fall for you. October is always a guessing game in the high country!

Beautiful photos, ih! I think you were lucky to get the new snow on the peaks and have colors in the aspens in your photos, too. Lucky you!

Glad you reported back and shared your photos. It is so hard to predict the perfect viewing time for the colors but it's always a wonderful time in the fall.
