do most trip insurance policies cover canceling if the u s state dept issues a travel advisory or do you have to have addtional coverage? my son was going to cancun and now there is an advisory any help!

There's an advisory against traveling to Cancun? What for (crime)?

I thought there has been advisory against traveling to all of MEXICO, because of lots of kidnapping lately.

Unless you have a "cancel for any reason" plan, your trip insurance would not cover cancellation in such an event. Trip insurance sometimes offers cancellation for acts of terrorism, but there have been no acts of terrorism in Cancun. And I can't imagine why on earth you would not want your son to go? Yes, there is some drug-related crime, but the people getting killed are by and large directly involved in the drug trade. There was a scarier incident in Acapulco last year, but I have heard of nothing specifically affecting tourist areas of Cancun.

He should exercise reasonable precautions and not get too drunk when he's out on the town. And I would strongly encourage you to remind him that drug use and purchase is a serious crime in Mexico.

Then I think you have relatively little to worry about.

FYI for everyone: There is NO travel warning about Mexico. There is a very general travel advisory about the issue of increasing crime in Mexico, and the primary focus is on Baja (specifically Ciudad Juarez). There is a mention of Oaxaca (where there was some political unrest that is now past) but absolutely no mention of Cancun or Yucatan.

I think lots of universities have taken upon themselves to warn their students about Spring Break in Mexico, based on the travel alert.

I just read an article on this that said you're only likely to get into trouble in Cancun if you're buying drugs. Let's hope he stays away from that scene.
