Trip Help
I've never been to Arizona before and want to visit the last week in March. I will be flying into Phoenix and spending a total of 6 days. I like to drive thru the deserts, I don't like resorts, malls, crowds, golf or new age spas but I also don't want to stay in motels that don't feel clean or safe. My perfect vacation was driving around Death Valley and Mojave.
How does this trip sound; Day 1 arrive in Phoenix and drive straight out for a first night in Sedona. Day 2 drvie thru the Petrified Forest onto Canyon de Chelly. Day 3 onto Monument Valley for the night. Day 3 Monument to Grand Canyon Day 4 Grand Canyon back to Phoenix for 2 nights ( I have a friend to visit and I want to see the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings) |
You will get more replies if you repost with Arizona in your thread title.

Too much. I would eleminate something. You need 2 days in each place in my opinion. Unless, you just want to drive, which isn't the way to see these places. If you don't do much hiking, you could see the GC in a day. Canyon De Chelly and Monument Valley, you would probably want to do a tour. GC, I would suggest a helicopter.
Near Monument Valley is Valley of the Gods, Moki Dugway, Muley Point, and Goosenecks of the San Juan. All very interesting. |
First of all I don't understand your double listing for Day 3. Please explain, since you say you're only spending a total of 6 days on the trip.
For Day 2, you're not leaving yourself much time to experience the wonders of Canyon de Chelly. If you drove straight there from Sedona, it would take close to four hours. And, since you've built in a drive through the Petrified Forest, that leaves even less time for Canyon de Chelly. Following up on your plans, you would obviously have to leave that site early the next morning to have enough time to experience Monument Valley. Then, you are faced with a similar situation of having to leave Monument Valley early the next morning to allow enough time to experience the Grand Canyon. |
Since your stated objective is to drive through deserts this sounds like a great itinerary.
If you have any desire to actually see or enjoy any of the destinations then I think you're nuts. |
