Trip for older parents ?
I have a dilemma and I need help!
My brothers and I want to get a vacation for my mother and father because they are just great people :) Anyway, my mother has a heart condition so she can't take higher altitudes (Grand Canyon is hard on her) or smoking. Because of her heart condition she can't walk very far. My father on the other hand loves to gamble. I would like to find a place where my mother and father could relax and just enjoy the quiet and/or scenery, but where my father could go gamble if he felt like it and my mother would still have things she could do. Any suggestions? |
Do you have preferences in the country? Laughlin, NV could be nice for them. Right on the CO river.
|
From where would they be traveling - getting to destination might also be a challenge with their health problems.
|
Wow - responses already!
Actually they go to Laughlin a lot so I would like to explore other options. They live in Phoenix. My mother can fly with no problem though. My brothers suggested maybe a cruise but when I looked on this forum people talked about how smokey cruise ships were. But if my mother could avoid smoke and my father could gamble it could be a possibility. |
Do you want to take them somewhere they haven't been? Or someplace to relive a happy memory?
I would think it will be a challenge to find a non-smoking casino. Even here in California, where we don't tolerate a lot of public smoking, even out of doors now, people probably can still smoke in casinos. There must be non-smoking cruises. |
Most cruise lines restrict where passengers can smoke - such as not in restaurants. We don't like smoke, and had no trouble avoiding it on cruise.

There's a casino about 2 miles from Solvang...the "danish village" north of Santa Barbara. They'd have to fly into SB and then drive 40 min to Solvang. There are nice scenic drives nearby, winery tours and shops. They could even fly into SB and stay in Santa Barbara, with your father just hopping one of the frequent coach bus trips up to the nearby casino while your mom shops, sees a movie or a stage show in SB, or maybe there's a winery-tour bus from SB.

There are several indian casinos in the Palm Springs area. The Temecula area also has a few to choose from as well.
What other types of activities do they enjoy? |
There are a lot of Indian casinos near San Diego. All of them allow smoking because they do not have to comply with California laws. It's ususally not too hot here, there are plenty of places where you can just sit and enjoy the scenery, although many of them are difficult to get to without a car

How about a real getaway -- to Quebec, where many (if not all) the casinos are smoke free and it is the closest thing you can get to Europe without crossing an ocean?
|
Have you ruled out Las Vegas where something is happening 24 hours a day?
|
Theres a non-smoking Casino in Niagara Falls Ontario called the Fallsview Casino and Resort... It is very much like a Vegas property with views of the Falls... along with a Grayline Tour of the Falls area and a Wine region, there is a lot to see, plenty of gambling, and food and fun nearby.... good luck

Palm Springs has a casino in downtown, the casino hotel has a spa, or you can choose any place around. I stayed at Chase, quiet small place for older generation, great location. Food, shopping, activities. There is a big Date Festival (the edible dates :) ) in February.
|
I stayed in downtown Palm Springs 5 years ago with my in laws (then upper 70's/ low 80's). It was easy to walk around and we did go to the Indian casino, Spa Casino. They have a decent sized non smoking section.

I meant ages were upper 70's/ low 80's not temps, LOL.
