TRIP CANCELLEATION INSURANCE

Guide books and tour companies mention about travel (or trip?) cancellation insurance, because of the short travel season in Alaska (and hence strict cancellation policies). Whom do we purchasde these from? From tour providers or other insurance companies? Please help with tips/suggestions. Thanks.

If we take a trip that has a lot of non refundable costs or if we travel overseas or to the Caribbean, we buy our insurance from Travel Guard-- www.travelguard.com.

You can compare policies from numerous insurance providers on www.insuremytrip.com. Read all the fine print on the policy, only buying what you need. If you have any problems, call the 800# and they will help you.

American Express offers Global Travel Shield at quite a good rate - I believe it's under $40 a person. I've used it several times now.

The above are good suggestions we use Travel Guard, usually, but do go to insuremytrip.com and you can compare. CSA Travel Protection has three different plans. When figuring the amount of insurance to purchase don't include any hotels, etc. which you can cancel with no penalty. That will cut your insurance cost.

Do not insure with tour providers. If they go belly-up you are out of luck.
