Trip across US - ideas?

I'm planning a three to five month trip across America (excluding the Northeast, where I live), probably beginning in August. Mixing some leisure with education, the trip will probably be punctuated by the following items:

1. Retracing parts of the Lewis & Clark trail, particularly the Upper Missouri scenic area.
2. Bike the Going to the Sun Road
3. The LA music scene
4. Snowboard on Mammoth Mountain
5. Get a feel for Portland's Urban Growth ring
6. A game in Texas Stadium
7. End the trip in Key West

I'd like more ideas to get a ground level feel for different parts of the country. Maybe you all can suggest something in your hometown? Anything goes. Thanks!

if you like baseball then you should definitely check out games at Wrigley Field, Coors Field and the San Francisco stadium (can't remember the name).
You really must not miss Zion and bryce natinal Parks in Utah. Then heda west on I-15 through part of Arizona and on to Las Vegas.

Then make sure you get to Castroville, Gilroy and the Napa Valley. Also make sure you get to Lake Tahoe, Carmel, and San Fran not in that order.

Its my dream to take a trip across the country with wife and dog and eat at all the great independently owned great restaurants along the way.

Have a great time! Lucky you.
