Tried the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook?
My family (2 adults and 4 kids ages 8, 6 and twins that are 3) is doing a grand road tour of the Southwest. The older kids saw pictures of the Wigwam Motel in Holbroook and want to stay there. Unfortunately Mom saw a writeup in a travel brochure that said "saggy matresses" and now thinks this may be a dirty place. Does anyone have any experiences here? Thanks.

I've bicycled past it, and it looked well-kept from the outside. It seems like such a piece of 40-50's that I would at least check it out. Ask to see the room first. If that request is denied, then move on.

Thanks for the points. BigRed, the search pulled up info on the Wigwam Resort in Phoenix, not the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook. Though the resort sounds nice, I am looking for a more retro/rustic experience.

I went in one of the units a few years ago. We were driving past and we stopped to take pictures. I saw one of the units was open and a maid was cleaning it. She let me look around. It was neat and clean and very funky. We would have stayed but they were totally booked up. Go for it. Unfortuately I didn't get to sit on a mattress.

We have been to the Route 66 Wig Wam. We still talk about it today-ten years later). It was fun, one night was enough though. The were very clean, nothing fancy (unless you call the Magic fingers machine fancy!). They are situated near the rails, I though it added to the "ambiance".

Message: Has anyone stayed at the Wigwam Motel on Rt. 66 in Holbrook, AZ? (each room in an individual teepee)
We've passed by several times and the kids would really like to stay there this summer.
If you've stayed there, anything in particular that you can recommend we request? Or avoid?
Thanks in advance!

If this is the place I'm thinking of, Bill Geist of CBS Sunday Morning stayed there during a road trip that aired last May. I guess you can pull up the story in the show's archives.
Right now I am very tempted to make a bunch of references to the Vacation movies.

Message: I remember bicycling past the Wigwam in 1990 & 91 on cross-country bicycle trips and thinking what a great place it would be to stay. However, our group was staying at the Comfort Inn in Holbrook instead.
While I can't tell you anymore that that, I will say that even 12 years later, I remember how well the couple who owned & operated the Comfort Inn treated our group of about 70 people. Thank you!
Nearby was the Painted Desert (see it!) and the Meteor Crater near Winslow, which I guess would be ok if you were driving, but for an extra 13 miles of bicycling on a 90-some mile route that day, it was major disappointment.
Back to the Wigwam - I didn't look like the type of place where there would be a lot of extra things "to request" ... just a unique stay in a bit of Americana.

Yes, from what i recall, it looks well cared for. I realize its not like requesting a specific suite at the Ritz however, just thought i'd ask.
Thanks again ~ and any other thoughts from anyone??

I can't speak for the one in Arizona, but the ones here are OK. They are being considered for placement on the Historic Register.
You can find out more about both locations on the website www.roadsideamerica.com
