trendy AND luxurious in NYC?
 

I have found affordable deals to stay at the Michelangelo (by all acounts luxurious) and the Giraffe (clearly cool). We have found (and reserved) a 600 sq ft suite @ Michelangelo for $225/nite and a 325 sq ft king room at the Giraffe for 269/nite. Giraffe does provide wine and cheese and I hear the cont breakfast is better at the Giraffe. Afraid Michelangelo will be a little old fashioned, even though lovely. Afraid the Giraffe will be fun, but get much less for the money. I like the neighborhood of Giraffe, but will kick myself if it doesn't feel luxurious if I choose it over the Mich.

I haven't stayed at either, but know the luxury hotel scene in NYC pretty well. I'm not sure why the Giraffe is priced higher than the Michelangelo. Looking at the rooms, amenities, style and what each hotel is trying to accomplish, the Michelangelo seems to offer much more (regardless of price); and since you'd be getting twice as much room for less money, I'd say the value factor makes this one a no-brainer.

Maybe this will seem like over-simplification, but there are quite a few midtown luxury hotels. Michelangelo, like most, must remain competitive. But Giraffe doesn't have that much competition in the "trendy" zone. And we all know that trendoids don't care what something costs so long as it is THE place to stay. You pay more so you can say to other trendoids that you stayed at the Giraffe. It's that simple.

Just had to put my 2c in here, Park Ave at 27th St (or so) is considered trendy? I used to live just a couple of blocks away and would not say that area is trendy at all. It's mostly business in that area and a couple of restaurants, the Giraffe, though cute, is not on the same level at the Michangelo.

Take the bigger space, better location, and less money,,,,MUCH better deal.
