Travelling to San Francisco to Mendocino via public transport

Is it possible to travel by bus or train from San Francisco to Mendocino? What are the route details? How long would it take? Is it better to drive?

Definitely better to drive. The train does not go there. You may be able to take Greyhound bus, but I wouldn't recommend it even if you could.

The nearest Greyhound stops are Willits and Ukiah which are 40 miles away over on hwy 101. You really need a car for the north coast

Most areas of the US do not have good public transportation, with some exceptions, like New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and perhaps Honolulu. Those are just a few that come to mind, but for areas outside cities in most places you absolutely need a car.

There are also tours that you can take, such as this one:

I don't know anything about the quality nor the cost of such tours and would agree with the others that the best way to enjoy the North Coast of California is by self-driven car.
