Did anyone recommend where the OP should stay in Denver? We usually stay near/in LODO, with easy access to the DAM and the aquarium is reasonably close, but I'm not sure that is the best area to stay in anymore (though we like pedestrian areas). By the way, other things to do in Denver include the Natural History museum and airplane museum (Wings over the Rockies? )
I think the OP needs to weigh back in on what they think they want to accomplish.

Thank you for all of the great responses so far! Can you recommend some things to see and do in Breckenridge, Frisco, Aspen and Vail if we do not ski?
Hotel recommendations would also be much appreciated.
Thanks again

You'll visit in October, so there won't be any skiing anyway.
If you're here in early October, you'll probably be in time to see the aspens changing. Fall is gorgeous here.
We love Aspen, for all there is to do, for its beauty, and its raucous western history. Don't be put off by reports that it is too glitzy. I think Vail is much more so.
The Gant is a nice condo hotel there, within walking distance of Aspen proper, plus free shuttle service.

A few more obscure places we enjoyed are:
Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art in Denver
Red Rocks Park in Morrison
World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs
Arcade Amusements in Manitou Springs (vintage arcade games)
We also give our vote for Rocky Mountain NP, and Denver Botanic Gardens. Two more recommendations: Sports Authority Field Tour and the State Capitol building.
