Travelling to a hotel from JFK
 

Hi,
I am planning to visit NYC in Sept. I will be flying down to JFK and staying in a hotel somewhere in midtown/near central park. My question is - normally how do people travel from the airport to a hotel in the area I mentioned above. I dont plan to rent a car as my visit is going to be in and around the city. Are there any hotels that provide shuttle service from the airport to the hotel.

The only hotels that provide shuttle are those in the immediate vicinity of the airport - not ones in Manhattan.

You can get a cab for a $45 flst fee - with toll and tip about $60. A car service is about the same.

You can take public transit for much less but then you have to be willing to haul your luggage on and off various trains and up and down stairs at Penn Station and in the subway and probably take a cab from Penn Station to your hotel.

Air Train and subway is about $7.50 and air Train plus Long Island RR is about $1.50 - each per person.

There are also shuttle buses that take you to a central spot in the city. These are somewhere about $15 per person - and and you then have to take cab or subway to your hotel.

If you tell us exactly where your hotel is people can give specific directions.

LIRR is not $1.50 per person. It is $8.75 per person (Peak/Rush hours) and $6.25 per person during Off-peak hours (Non-rush and weekends). Add to that the AirTrain fee of $5.00 per person (paid separately at the AirTrain turnstiles).

The AirTrain/Subway combination costs $7.25 per person. $5.00 for the AirTrain fee and $2.25 for the subway. The combined fare is done using a MetroCard which is purchased from vending machines at the AirTrain turnstiles.

Take a taxi or reserve to be picked up by Carmel car service.

Sorry - the $1.50 was a type - I meant about $12.50 - for Air Train and the LIRR.

And yes, I always take a car service (to) or a tax (from) since I have long passed the stage of hauling luggage around on the subway.

What will work best for you will depend on how many people are traveling together, how much luggage you have and where you are staying. After that it's just personal preference.

We (2 adults) with 1 suitcase prefer Air Train/Subway and then walk to the hotel. If we had small children or too much luggage, this route would not be my first choice.

If you choose a cab make sure you take a licensed, yellow cab from the airport and not some random, rogue car service.

And don't go with the guys soliciting you inside the airport - go out to the taxi stand.
