travelling route 66 is it worthwhile ?

Last summer my daughter saw a sign post in Chcago indicating "Start Of Route 66" and since then has been trying to talk me into taking a trip on .....666 !!! My dilemma is Is it a worthwhile venture, as in what to see, what to do, where to stay and possible side trips off of the route to see sights of interest ,Im just starting to research this "venture and thinking of May June travel dates !! I will appreciate any/all suggestions/ comments Thanks

Route 66 extends over 2000 miles. Some of this is very scenic, much of it not so much. It is historic as a cross country route, but I'd research a bit before I'd commit to driving all of it.

Not much of route 66 is actually left. There are some old stores, but most of it is now part of state highways and unimpressive. Do some google search or find one of the guidebooks about it. Honestly, it isn't as authentic or interesting as it would seem.

There are some states where you can travel on actual Rt. 66 roadway. Other places the original highway has been replaced with Interstates or other roads. Get a guidebook and decide what you want to see. Even if you can't travel on the original, you can still take a road trip in the spirit of Rt. 66.

My DH and I did the entire Route 66 four years ago. I recommend the "Route 66 Traveler's Guide" and the Route 66 Adventure Handbook". Alot of it is still there, but you have to do your research and get the turn by turn directions in finding it, as some states post with their "Historic 66" signs, other states not. I went online and there is turn by turn directions I printed out for each state. List what is there to see. We spent a whole month and thoroughly enjoyed each state. I have lots of information I could post here, but I found 99% of it online. So do your research. It is very very much worth it.

See if you can check out a copy of The Mother Road by Michael Wallis before you go. It has a good amount of information on the people and places you can see along Route 66, though some of the people in the book have died since it was published.

Hwy. 666 in New Mexico has been renamed, but you can still drive it if you dare. ;-)

I hated it when they re-numbered old US-666...to US-491.
