Travelling music for U.S. and elsewhere

Am planning to drive across the country from northern Virginia to S. California (interstates 66, 81, 40, 15) and need some recommendations of music to travel by. My route goes through Tucumcari which made me think of "Willin'" by Little Feat.

Please recommend some songs that refer to U.S. locations, driving, etc. ANY style of music would do.

So far, I've got:

Willin' by Little Feat
Sweet Virginia by Rolling Stones
Radar Love by Golden Earring
City of New Orleans by ?
Country Roads by John Denver
Arizona by ?
Goin to New York by Climax Blues Band

Please Come To Boston, Dave Loggins
City of New Orleans, Arlo Guthrie
El Paso, Marty Robbins
Deep in the Heart of Texas, Hank Thompson
Truckin, Grateful Dead

This was done already real recent like. I read it myself. It was good. Can anyone find the thread that has mrnfl's list of music all typed out already? The darned search thingy ain't kicking into gear right now. Where is the person that archives all the online conversations here on this site? How are we sposed to find anything here if we can't find anything anyway.

Thanks ipod_robbie!

Tara, do recall what the message title is or who started it? I searched for "music" and didn't see a title that was relevant. Found one old list (which I copied) when I searched on "travel songs". What would you search for to find the thread you were referring to?

Route 66 - Asleep at the Wheel - this is a no brainer. Of course Nat King Cole and Manhatten Transfer's versions are also great, but Asleep's version really catches the spirit.
No Particular Place to Go - Chuck Berry
Miles and Miles of Texas - Asleep at the Wheel
Do You Know the Way to San Jose - Dionne Warwick
Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf

Truckin' - Grateful Dead
Hollywood Nights, Turn the Page-Bob Seeger
Running on Empty, The Load-out- Jackson Brown
Born to Run, Pink Cadillac -Springsteen
Me & Bobby McGee- Janis Joplin

That's all I can think of after only one cup of coffee. :)

I think before registration there was a music topic. It might be on the 'other topics' forum.

"The Promise Land" by Elvis. He starts off in Norfolk and heads to Las Vegas. You're not on the same route, but why not.

How about songs of each state or a musician from that state as you ride through. Easier for some states. Or maybe the soundtrack from "Oklahoma" driving through the state (if you go through it).

With the recent death of fiddle player Vassar Clements you might want to find some of his guest appearances on famous albums. Played with the Beatles and Teh Grateful Dead along with some of the more recent 'classical bluegrass' type music.

Jazz for the Open Road
There is a CD out called "Route 66", a compilation of songs all about this highway--all of them have sort of a country beat--and it's GREAT for driving, especially for Route 66 :)
For "Route 66", try doing a search on the internet as my cousin got it for me at a specialty Route 66 store in Oklahoma City. Have a great trip

Hi again!
The CD is called "Songs from Route 66; Music from the All American Highway" available from Amazon.com

Some of my many, many favorites are:
Ramblin' Man - The Allman Brothers
Call Me the Breeze - Lynyrd Skynyrd
I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
Under My Wheels - Alice Cooper
Backroads - Ricky Van Shelton ("I've got the radio blastin', I've got the windows rolled down. And I'm cruisin' these backroads on the outskirts of town. I can hear the wind a-blowin' and hear the big engines whine. When I'm cruisin' these backroads all my troubles are behind..")
Joe Knows How to Live - Eddie Raven ("He had four new tires on that old Cadillac, Betty the waitress, and some clothes in the back. A dashboard full of road maps of Mexico, yah Joe knows how to live.")

The opening line of The Weight by The Band says it all -- "I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half-past dead."

Glad to see several before me have mentioned Truckin'.

I just did a search for state names songs and the thread came up. But it was one from last December.

There was one from several years ago that had hundreds of responses and that all had city or state names in the song TITLE. I think we had more than a couple hundred of those examples.

But the shorter one from last Dec. comes up if you search for: state name songs.

I picked up The Best of Arlo Guthrie today because it has "City of New Orleans". It also has "Coming Into Los Angeles" which is definitely relevant for this trip.

I will have to find that Elvis tune because Norfolk-Vegas and my route have about 75% in common.

Hi mrwunrfl, don't forget about Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again"!

And have a beautiful trip!

Stephanie Aug 25th, 2005 02:01 AM

I'd suggest "Highwayman" a CD by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristopherson and Johnny Cash. I'd suggest Willie Nelson's greatest hits that would have "Georgia" on my mind, City of New Orleans, "My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys". Also Johnny Cash too. Country music for country travel always seems appropriate. Love the Route 66 theme so soothing to the ears.
