travelling from Miami to New York

We are driving from Miami to Long Island on New Year's Eve. We want to stop at a hotel after about 10 hours. Wondering if North Carolina would be a good spot to book a hotel? Any suggestions would be great! TIA

I probably wouldn't book anything until you were on the road and decided where it might be.
This shows two possible ways of traveling, the I77 I81 route keeping you out of 2-3 major metropolitan areas. There are plenty of motels all along interstates.

We did that the last time and it ended up pouring rain and everyone pulled over so there were no rooms available. :(

Do not wait too late in the day to book. You never know how things will be, but one trip we had to drive another hundred miles to find a hotel with a room available. After a long drive, the extra hours were miserable.

I've driven a lot of this route more than once and I would NOT go out of my way just to avoid Washington, Baltimore on NY eve. What I WOULD DO is plan the timing since there is NOT going to be the heavy traffic in those two places on New Years day, a NON-work day for most people.

So my question is: where will I be 10 hours after leaving Miami?

You can be around Florence, SC. LOTS of motels at that exit.

The above is taking I95 route to NYC

If you take the alternate I77/81 etc. You could stop in Charlotte NC in 10 hours.

With regard to your last experience, "anything is possible''

If you have a smart phone or tablet, there are several free apps that will list vacancies along the road, and allow to make a reservation (literally) in less than a minute. After eight hours of driving, you can check how things look about 100 miles down the interstate -- if vacancies are few, then you might decide to book something down the road.

I've done this a dozen times, and invariably found a place near where I want to stop every time. That includes the six hour parking lot on the interstate after the eclipse this summer, where I found a place one mile from where I was, after I decided enough was enough.

According to Google this is the distance from Miami to Florence, SC.
9 hour 36 min (656.5 mi) via I-95 N

And the same to Charlotte if he takes the other route which will miss major metropolitan areas.

Gretchen Dec 12th, 2017 04:31 AM

He has to decide which it will be at Charleston and I26 to Charlotte.
