Travelling from JFK to Manhatten
We are looking into cost of travelling from JFK to 77th West Street, Manhatten mid August and Manhatten to JFK mid September - taxi, service car eg Carmel, shuttle, bus or train. The taxi will have their meter running (plus tolls and tip) while the car service is a flat rate (plus tolls and tip) and will be cheaper with a coupon and depending on the time of day. Anyone know how many tolls we could encounter between JFK and Upper West Manhatten and approximate cost, assuming they take a relatively direct route?
Anyone favour train travel from the airport over taxi or service car? |
1) There is no 77th West St. There is some number on west 77th st. or there is a West St. downtown and there's probably a number 77 on it.
2) Regardless of which it is (but you should know) the taxi from JFK will be the same as it's a fixed price of $45 plus any toll (~$5) and tip of 15-20% of the fare or usually about $60 total. 3) If you want to consider public transportation, you can get options on hopstop.com A train will run $7-12/person depending on which train service you use but traveling on the subway will require stairs with luggage. There's an express bus to Port Authority bus terminal for $15/person and then you can use taxi, bus or subway to your final destination. Given your spelling of "favour" I'm assuming you're from the UK. After a transatlantic flight, a taxi or car service is infinitely easier. Dial7.com is a car service with prices similar to a taxi. They'll ask you to phone when you have your luggage. |
PS, the one thing you shouldn't do is use a shared van service that drops everyone at their respective hotels. This takes forever and buses are often uncomfortable and overcrowded with drivers who are not well trained. The express bus is here http://www.nyairportservice.com/

<< Upper West Manhatten >>
I would assume the poster means somewhere on West 77th St. Manhattan is spelled with an 'a.' I would take a car service. They should take the RFK/Triborough Bridge and that toll would be $5. That would be your only toll. |
It sounds like you mean west 77th ST - on the upper west side. As noted taxi fare is $45 flat plus toll and 20% (expected) tip. A car sevice can be arranged in dvance - but will cost approximately the same.
DO NOT take the Super Shuttle - it drives al over the city dropping people at various plasces and will probably take you 2 hours to get to you hotel (it will be the end ofthe trip). Shuttle bus to a central point is about $18 per person - but then you need to take a subway or cab to the hotel - so not much savings. |
West 77th Street it is and my apologies for incorrectly spelling Manhattan!
Our roots, mclaurie, are English but we are Kiwis who have lived in Sydney for the last 20 years. While our spelling is still very English find we are taking on more North American spelling - not a bad thing. Thank you all for your tips - looks like we have decided to go with a car service. We have checked out Carmel but will have a look at Dial7.com as well. |
Jenny62 - I use both Carmel and Dial7 depending upon which has the cheapest rate at the time. They're both reliable.
