Traveling with a Laptop

I'll be traveling to New York and was wondering about bringing my laptop with me. I've seen people with them everywhere and while I travel with mine when it's business, I'm not sure about it's safekeeping when I'm vacationing and won't have it on me all the time. I remember seeing kids with laptops all over Europe last year and wondered where they put these expensive toys while they were sightseeing. Any ideas?

I put mine in the hotel safe when I travel.

A laptop will fit in there? Those safes seem so small!

I leave mine in the hotel safe, too. I have left it in my rooms from time to time with no problems.
I have to admit, though, as much as I like to be "connected" while away from home, I find carrying a laptop one more thing to keep up with, especially if I've booked a flight. Taking the thing out of the bag and trying to handle my shoes at the same time is a bit much. I love my tech toys but think my next trip I might leave it at home.

I leave mine in the drawer with (under) my lingerie.

BUT - I never let it be apparent that I have a laptop (I carry it in a larger briefcase, don;t leave any wires visible - and always put it away when any staff are in the room - maids or room service - or anyone.)

And yes - some of the safes are too small for a laptop.

Left mine in our locked suitcase when we were out sight-seeing. Had no problems at all.

How about locking it to something immoveable in the hotel room? Or is it too easy to cut through those lock cables? I usually hide mine in a drawer. And I further assume that hotel maids value their jobs more than my laptop, although I realize that isn't always true.

I travel a lot with work and have always just left my laptop on the desk in the hotel room. Maybe I shouldn't, but I have never had a problem.
