traveling to Houston for 1 night

Hello All,
My family and friends are traveling to Houston Texas at the end of March. We are arriving around 7:00 pm on a Saturday. We are leaving on a Cruise out of Galveston the next day. So we wanted to spend 1 night in Houston and have dinner and enjoy the fun side of Houston for 1 night. So what I need to know is;
What part of Houston should we look for a hotel where we can have dinner and have fun within walking distance on a Saturday night? We will have all ages in our group
thanks for your help

Ok there is a Plan B that we just thought of. we are flying into Hobby Airport and thought it might be better to go to Galveston directly from the airport. Then we could have dinner in Galveston, Get a good nights rest then wake up and explore galveston. So what is a good area In Galveston to stay overnight where we can explore on foot
thanks

We like The Tremont House. It's downtown and close to the Strand

The Galvez is a nice one, but not particularly closed to anything:

I should have noted that the Galvez is across the street from the beach
