Traveling to Cancun from Montana
traveling from Montana to Cancun, which way should we go? What should we see and do when we get there and along the way?

Sounds like a great trip. Buy Sanborn's (an agency)auto ins for Mex. because they give a detailed travel guide for your route and can help plan your route.Your US auto ins is void in Mex. At most TX border towns. Good tires are a must. Cancun has a ultra-beautiful beach. Good luck and have fun.

Cancun? We just got back from Cancun in January. I have to report that it was not up there in the top ten of travel experiences, for the following reasons:
1. it was too cold when we went; 2. we couldn't really go see the ruins because our children 1 and 8 could not withstand the rigors of a 12 hour day (the closest ruin is 2 hours away, but it is a full day commitment) 3. the beaches are beautiful however, if there are black flags flying, forget it, you can't go in the water because of the strong and deadly undertow. at our hotel, they chased you out, then again, who in their right mind would go in. 4. there just is not a whole lot to do. We did however, stay at a very nice hotel, Beach Palace. They were very accomodating and very sweet. It did not have heat (I don't think any hotels do down there) which was only a problem because it was so cold when we went. |
Unless you are going in January, it will be warm or HOT. Do not worry.

My only input would be to avoid Club Med Cancun. Rooms were small, dark, completely 'creature comfortless' and generally run down. A 'double' bed is really two twins pushed together.
Worst of all (unless you are into it) is the 'summer camp' atmosphere. The staff are the camp counselors and you are the little campers. Complete with skits, planned activities and meals together. Want a romantic dinner for two? Too bad, the tables seat 8 and you are expected to be social. Ugh, ick. Never again. Club Med Cancun is also a long way from Cancun city (of course the Club would prefer you never leave the premises unless on their arranged outings). Otherwise I liked Cancun and its beaches, there is even some decent snorkeling. Visit the Maya sites and learn a little of the history - facinating stuff. We went in January last year and tho the weather wasn't perfect, it was hot and sunny some days. I'd bet that if your plans are for Spring-Fall you'd be fine. Just make sure you get a nice normal hotel. |
Cancun is fine if you are looking for great sun and ocean. If your looking to experience Mexico don't expect it here. This area is like being in a resort area in Florida very Americanized! Don't bother going downtown unless you want to experience being mauled by people begging for your business. Also the prices are higher in the markets where you barter than the malls along the road near the resorts. If your looking for gifts. Food is bad also.
