Traveling solo NY-Moab- Zion-LV-NY
 

Leaving Sept 7 - Flying NY to SLC, picking up rental car and heading to Moab. Joining a photography workshop group for 4 days.

Then, thinking of driving from Moab to Zion (1 day) and hiking the Narrow.(1 day) . Then drive to LV to fly home to NY (1 day).

Really needing an adventure.. Feeling undecided about doing it all alone (husband not interested in this sort of trip). Need encouragement or discouragement - comments?

Sounds like a great time. I wouldn't hike the narrows alone, tho. The north rim of the Grand Canyon was perfect alone. Have fun (and make reservations before you go).

Dayle often visits these National Parks by herself. Hopefully she'll pop in with some great advice.

Regarding the narrows at Zion. You can hike downstream with a guide - there are several outfitters in Springdale that offer trips including water boots and hiking poles. If you go with a guide you won't be alone.

You can also just hike upstream - you take the valley bus to the last stop in the valley, walk about 1mi on paved trail along the river. From there you can walk a short distance or farther upstream in the narrows. The farther you go the fewer people there will be. You don't have to go far to experience the beauty, and it doesn't need to be an all day trek.

Moab to Zion is a long way, but it is a fantastic trip and for a photographer will provide lots of opportunities for great shots no matter which way you go. The faster route would probably be west on i 70 and south on i 15. This is high speed interstate travel, but takes you over the San Rafael Swell and the views are very nice. The slower route, I like to go west to south on 24 then 95 to 12 and over to some other number that I don't remember, slower but awesome scenery.

I am very jealous!!! I am heading out with hubby in October but the idea of a photography workshop in Moab sounds unbelievable!! Rock on sista for doing this alone.

You go, girl! Bummer about your having only one day between Moab and Zion, because there is such a lot between the two: Capitol Reef NP, Bryce NP, and Red Canyon National Recreation Area just west of Bryce. Last year we went north from Moab on 191 to 70, and then south and west on 24 to Torrey and then south on 12 past Bryce to 89, then south to 9 and west to Zion.... the highway 12 section is pretty spectacular.

I have had a solo trip to Zion and loved it. My husband and I have been there numerous times. However, I wouldn't do the Narrows walk alone. I think anything in water is advisable with a partner. The guided hike downstream of the Narrows is a huge trip, but I'm pretty sure you could get a guide for an upstream walk. Or(as I did) you could make a few friends while staying at the Lodge and you might have a group to join for the day.

Will heartily second all who are suggesting a visit to Moab (especially Arches), Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon North Rim, and Zion. Gorgeous places all, and a must to visit. Go and enjoy, and remember that if you're traveling alone, you can set the agenda you want -- yes, that's a good thing.
