traveling single in NYC
Hi, I am going to NYC next week by myself. I am seeing a show every night and touring during the day. I am wondering about going to restaurants for dinner in the theatre district by myself. If you have done it, what was it like? I can do anything by myself-lived in Asia for 6 years-but for some reason feel a bit insecure about this. Have you been to the American Folk art museum? How is it? what did you like about it? Any other ideas and suggestions for traveling single in NYC would be most welcome. Thanks.

Dine out all the time by myself in New York.
My favorite is Trattoria d'ell Arte on Seventh Avenue. You'll find most restaurants treat you just as well as if you were a couple. |
NYC is used to lots of diners by themselves - often business diners. Generally I would stay away from Times Square - and go to more residential neighborhoods to find places that are better bargains - and better food.
One thing you might consider is eating at the bar instead of at a table. Frequently you can fall into conversation with others doing the same and make the meal more enjoyable. And restaurants in all price ranges often have this option. Try the upper west side, the lower east side and the village for friendly, less expensive and often less formal options. Menupaes.com is a good resource for searching by neighborhood, cuisine and diner reviews, plus actual menus. |
I was also going to suggest dining at the bar. The following restaurants are have fantastic food and are great for dining at the bar:
The Red Cat Blue Ribbon Goblin Market |
Eat at the bar only if you are comfortable with that. Personally, I don't like to perch on a bar stool for my meal. I eat alone in NYC very frequently and don't have any hesitation about it. Infact, when you get away from Times Square you will see many single diners.
