Traveling northbound through Virginia on a Saturday In August

Any suggestions to avoid heavy traffic on a Saturday on I-95 northbound? Leaving from Williamsburg.

Take the train. (Sorry).

But if you must drive, the best time to travel is probably very early morning ... you can probably be in Richmond in an hour and through Fredericksburg in 90 minutes more if you leave at 6:00am.

We've tried alternate routes but, really, there aren't any that were satisfactory.

Agree with msrva (are you in RVA, msrva? ) The key is to leave early, allow for plenty of time and hope for the best.

When we drive between D.C. and Williamsburg, we always drive Route 17 between Saluda and Fredericksburg. It's a scenic route and we avoid about 1/2 of the I-95 driving that we'd encounter by driving from W'burg to Richmond to D.C.

Just drive I-64 to the exit for West Point and continue on Route 33 to Route 17. The traffic along Route 17 is generally light (much lighter than on I-95). And, if you leave early as already suggested, you'll encounter even less traffic.
