Traveling by taxi to hotel in NYC

We are a family of four traveling to NY and we will have 4 large suitcases. Will a taxi be able to take the four of us plus our bags together to our hotel? Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated!!! We don't want to have to take 2 taxis. Thanks!!!

Can I assume you're coming into one of the airports?

If so, just ask the taxi dispatcher for an SUV or larger van type taxi when you get to the front of the line. Might be a bit tight, but no reason you can't fit four plus bags.

We recently flew into Newark and didn't have a problem having them get us a van taxi for our trip back to our New Jersey home.

I guess it depends. How big are these suitcases, and which airport are you coming from? I haven't seen many vans at EWR, but you'll see them occasionally at the other two airports.

If you are trying to fit 4 29-inch bags into one taxi, then I think you may have a problem. Even in one of the vans, there isn't that much storage space. If you can't fit in a taxi, then you'll pretty much have no choice but to take more than one, so the logical solution would be to perhaps pack a bit less and take smaller bags.

Of course, you do have a cheaper alternative. Take an airport shuttle (not the one to Grand Central but rather on like SuperShuttle that drops you off directly at your hotel), and you can take as much giant luggage as you wish. Those vans are big.

How big is big?

I came into JFK on the red eye Fri AM and while waiting for my driver to bring the car around I saw another sedan pull up to a group of 3 young women. They had (I don't know how) 4 enormous body bags - 32" at a guess - 3 stuffed 22" rolling bags and an assortment of purses, tote bags, shopping bags and other junk (at least 3 items each.

As soon as the driver saw it he said all of this won;t fit and he would have to call for a larger car. They refused and said no one had told them there was a limit to the luggage they could have (all this in the pouring rain). He tried for about 15 minutes but this stuff just wouldn't fit (even with one of the giant body bags in the front passenger seat and some of the assorted junk in the floor infront - the passengers would have had to hold the rolling bags in their lap. At this point security came to move them along. They ended up putting one person and most of the luggage in the sedan and the 2 others with their rolle bags and purses had to go get a cab.

With 4 passengers in a cab usually 1 will have to sit in the front. Meaning if there are a lot of carry-ons the passengers will hae to hold them - assuming the "large" bags are human size - and not super size.

So be realistic aobut what you're taking. And, if yu have reall a LOT of luggage make up your mid to 2 cabs or order a lager vehicle from Carmel or Dial 7.
