Bring a stroller. When are you going? Where are you staying?

I have a one year old and live in NYC. A collapsible stroller is essential. The Central Park Zoo is great as is a stroll through FAO Schwartz toy store. Dylan's Candy Bar is fun - it's an amazingly colorful candy store that the little ones just go crazy for. The Musuem of Natural History is geared toward kids as well. They love all the animals and dinosaurs and such.

The Park restaurant has a great weekend brunch with music and lots of families with kids present.

If you go to the website for Time Out New York (it's a magazine) they have a section where they list all kinds of up-to-date events and shows that are suitable for families.

Just be aware that, in restaurants and other public places such as museums and theaters, people here are very sensitive to kids misbehaving / screaming / running around / having a tantrum. They will not hesitate to tell you to get your kid out of there.

Thank you so much for your advice. I did not know about the zoo and the candy store. I am sure we will visit them.
Thanks Again.

Dylan's Candy Store is located on Third Ave. at 60th Street. Catty-cornered from Bloomingdales.

FAO SCHWARZ (no T) also has a candystore within the toy store. 58th Street and Fifth Ave. FAO is great as the kids can really play with the toys.

Check out the huge Disney store. 55th Street and Fifth Ave.

If the weather is nice, the Central Park Zoo is lots of fun. The Museum of Natural History 79th St. and Central Park West is wonderful for kids. Lots of animals and dinosaurs. Check out their website.

I don't know where you live but if you have a Borders' or a Barnes & Noble near you, or you can check the Amazon website and see if there are any books available dealing with a 'kid visiting NYC.'

Have a good time.

We have taken out daughter to New York lots of times and she always has fun. We have always found that carrying her in a backpack works better than a stroller through. It is much easier when there are crowds and going onto the subway. I always feel safer with her in a backpack also. New York has lots of great neighborhood parks that are wonderful for taking much needed breaks and it lets them get their energy out! Have fun!

If you're traveling in NY with a one year old, the issue is less of finding something fun for her/him to do (are you realy going to take a one year old to a candy shop???) as it is keeping the baby comfortable while you get around.
Keep in mind that baby carriers/backpacks are allowed in most NY museums but not at all times(Not busy weekend hours, for example) and not in all galleries( special exhibits mnay have limited space. Strollers must usually be checked at the coat check area. If you use common sense (and especially if the adult/baby ratio is 2/1) you can have a great time and keep the baby happy too.
If you're going to pick one place just to take a one year old, make it the central park zoo. Museum of Natural history has nothing to keep that small a child interested
I would like to thank you for all the advice.
I am sure that we will have fun.
Regards.
