I take and enjoy Frommer's Budget Travel magazine. Does Fodor's have a magazine? What others do you enjoy?

I like National Geographic Traveler and National Geographic Adventure.

I agree with Budget Travel and National Geo Traveler, which I've just subscribed to again. I also like Sunset magazine's travel articles, which are mostly on the western states.

One I do not enjoy is Travel and Leisure. I subscribed to it, and after a few of them I never even bothered reading through it. Too many ads and the articles were always about extremely expensive resorts. I understand its for the upper class, but some of it was silly.

Like the perfect outfit to wear on your trip. It had like $5,000 pants, $3,000 shoes etc...come on.

I subscribe to Travel and Leisure (we've done so for years, just haven't given it up since it used to be a freebie with an American Express card), but I completely agree with Andy -- the places it profiles are generally so ridiculously expensive that I'd never consider staying there. I don't stay in hostels, but I don't spend $5000 a night for a hotel either :)

I thought our Travel and Leisure subscription expired years ago, but it still keeps coming. My favorite is when they announce those "money saving HOT specials" -- stay four nights at some resort for $2750 per night and get the fifth night for half price -- or something equally mind boggling.

I like some of the City magazines:
San Diego & Seattle in particular provide some nice travel info

Hello Connie, I use to subscribe to Travel and Leisure and also Conde Nast. I did not renew either subscription about five years ago. Patrick explains the reason quite well. I no longer subscribe to any magazine actually.

I always take Budget Travel. Love it.

Usually Conde Naste also (love Omnibusman). Sometimes National Geo Traveler or Travel & Leisure (too snooty) just for a change.

dmlove Sep 24th, 2008 08:11 AM

I like Budget Travel, too, but not really because it's a "budget travel" magazine. Mainly because it seems to focus on places I might actually go, and always gives good tips.

I was an initial subscriber to Conde Nast & recently let me subscription expire, the same w/T & L. Neither fit my style of travel nor provide much useful information (for me). I also subscribe to Budget, Nat'l Geo Traveler & France (out of the UK).

Agree with Budget Travel, and cancelled subs to T&L and CNT for the same reasons as everyone else -- a lot of the articles seem like ads in disguise -- "my week driving the new Porsche 911 S Coupe through the Italian countryside!"

I'm adding a vite for Islands magazine. My dad sent me a gift subscription and I was surprised to see it highlights not only the usual tropical suspects but also some cool spots off the coast of Canada, UK, Africa, etc. Lots of good inspiration there :)

SAnParis2 Sep 24th, 2008 10:33 AM

The Islands reference reminded me, almost forgot, Maco magazine is very good for the Caribbean (when I can get it).

TC Sep 24th, 2008 11:33 AM

I read all the magazines from my local library archives and subscribe to none. They seem too good to toss and take up too much room to keep. I would leave a pile at the doctor's office on each visit, but that wasn't nearly often enough to get rid of the stacks.

Connie Sep 24th, 2008 11:49 AM

I agree with everyone's opinions about T & L and Conde Nast. That's why I was looking for others like Budget Travel.

I'm going to give National Geographic and the others mentioned a look.

Thanks

This magazine is a little different but still geared somewhat to travel and that's Backpacker Magazine. I love it. It is chock full of good articles--not just a bunch of pictures and ads.

It's for day hikers as well as serious back country hikers.

frogoutofwater Sep 24th, 2008 04:14 PM

Oddly, one of my favourite travel magazines is CNN Traveller, even though I can't stand CNN the tv station.

suze Sep 24th, 2008 04:17 PM

I absolutely do NOT put Conde Nast and Travel & Leisure in the same category.

While Conde Nast is too expensive in most recommendations (hotels) there is still loads of useful information and interesting places to read about. Plus I love several of their monthly features and columns.

T&L is completely USELESS.
