Travel Friday Harbor to Olympic Peninsula?
A couple of friends and I are going on an REI trip around the San Juans in late August. The trip begins and ends in Friday Harbor. After that we'd like to explore the Olympic Peninsula on our own, probably renting a car on the Peninsula itself (assuming that's possible).
Any advice on how best to get from Friday Harbor to, say, Port Angeles or another likely spot on the Peninsula? Do we have to go back to Seattle or Anacortes or something? We'll likely want to end up in Seattle at the end, since that's a good point for getting us to and from Chicago, but that's up for discussion if it doesn't make sense. Thanks. |
You might be able to take the Victoria Express. It's passengers only which should work for you but you will have to transfer to another boat in Victoria BC so you will need passports. victoriaexpresss.com or 360-452-8088. The Washington State ferry is making two trips a day to Vancouver Island starting June 20th
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/Sche...roundtrip=true but they go into Sidney so you would have to take a cab or bus to Victoria where you can get the Victoria Express or the Black Ball line. http://cohoferry.com/main/?fares&PHP...e3185d009cf0eb Ron |
That was my thought... WA State Ferries from Friday Harbor to Sidney, bus to Victoria, and Black Ball Ferry across to Port Angeles. The ferry from Friday Harbor runs only once/day though, so you might end up having to spend a night in Victoria. I could think of worse things!

I've lived on San Juan for many years and I don't know why you or anyone would want to do it the convoluted way mentioned. Why go all the way to Canada and back? It would be much easier and far, far faster to just take the passenger boat that goes from Friday Harbor to Port Townsend in the summer months. We don't go that way because we like to take our own car (so we go the way through Whidbey island with WA state ferries..that's two ferries but far cheaper and less time than going through customs twice in addition to time for the rides and waits to laod) but the company Puget Sound Express goes from FH to PT. They have a web site which says their phone is call us (360) 385-5288
