transportation to Napa from SFO
 

We are flying into SFO from Detroit in October. We don't really want to rent a car. What are the options for getting to Napa? We are booked at The Villagio Inn.

I am unaware of any public transit options for SFO-Napa. But either way, you cannot get anywhere in the Napa valley without a car. Some people rent limo services for a day of wine tasting, but there are no deals. You pay a steep hourly rate. The wineries are not within walking distance of each other, they are spread all over the valley, in cities and off-beat roads. Make life easy, rent a car. That is how it works in California.

DavidDJ gave you an airport transport link. BUT the bigger problem is as Parrothead says -- once yoy are in Napa you will positively need a car to get around. The Villagio is not in Napa - it is in Yountville, which is up the valley from Napa.

And you will need a car to go most places in the valley. The Villagio is located at one end of Yountville and you could walk to some restaurants however it will be 5-10 minutes. You have some possibilities of places to eat most of them fairly upscale..Bouchon,Bistro Jeanty and of course, the French Laundry. I can't imagine Napa Valley without a car. The drive is not bad and relatively easy to figure out from SFO. If you don't want to rent at SFO why not take Evans(recommended earlier) and rent a car in the Valley. You will want one if you intend to wine taste at all.

Janis,<BR><BR>I looked on the Villagio Inn website, and Evans is the company they contract with for transportation from both OAK and SFO. It turns out that they also have an on site Enterprise rent a car as well as limo service. It will probably be more convenient to arrange transportation once Pattiz arrives in Napa Valley.

But I assumed (wrongly?) they weren't planning on renting a car at all. &quot;We don't really want to rent a car&quot; makes it sound like they don't want a car . . . <BR><BR>OK - pattiz - come back and let us know if you planned on renting a car once your are in Yountville. If not, you will definitely have very limited options for going places.

O.K., I'm back! Thanks for all the info everyone. You have succeeded in talking me into renting a car! We have never been to the Napa area and were therefore rather ignorant of its layout. Any other info re: getting around; best wineries/restaurants, etc.. would be greatly appreciated!

For a nice fairly inexpensive lunch stop in at The Nest on Hwy 29. Wonderful comfort food. It has a small patio, nothing super fancy, but at least check out the desserts. I had egg salad with pancetta, the toffee brickle cake was delicious!<BR>Since you are coming from SFO make sure to stop by Viansa. It has a wonderful wetland and Italian Marketplace with samples.<BR>You really do need a car! Glad you changed your plans. Try doing a text search too,as there is an incredible amount of very informative previous posts on Napa.
