transportation near San Antonio's Riverwalk

My daughter and I will be in San Antonio this week for a dance competition. The group is staying at the Crowne Plaza and will perform at the Municipal Auditorium--about 1/2 mile away, near as I can tell. We're not renting a car, although I'm second guessing that about now. Taxis from the airport seem to be cheaper than the shuttle so we'll do that but I'm wondering how best to get around once we're at the hotel. Are taxis plentiful?

I'm thinking that it's going to be sinfully hot and we just can't walk too far in the daytime heat. I checked the trolley paths and the Crowne Plaza doesn't seem to be near any of them. We will probably just do touristy things around the Riverwalk and the Alamo when the girls aren't dancing. One day, though, we're all going to Seaworld. Does anyone have any good ideas for transportation or should we just bite the bullet and rent a car? No one else in the group seems too worried about this but I'm a planner and hate to show up not knowing what we're going to do. Just how isolated is the Crowne Plaza anyhow? Help, Fodorites!!

To the top for me--anyone?

They chose the Crowne Plaza for a reason. It's only 3-4 blocks from the Municipal Auditorium.

And the hotel is just on the Northern Edge of Downtown. And is on the Riverwalk, though not the main section. Still, you can walk along the river all the way to near the Alamo and the main shopping/dining areas. Only about 7-8 blocks. So, you really don't need a car except going to Sea World.

I can't find any information about public transport there, so I think the best bet is to rent a car for the day to get there.

I think renting a car is your best bet, too.
www.mysa.com has some info on traffic, etc. I find it to be pretty useful.

Check out the streetcar route at http://www.sanantoniovisit.com/visit...rcitytrans.asp . See if the route fits your needs.

Hi Tess, sometimes a hotel will have a rental car agency on site so you can rent for the day--have you checked with Crowne Plaza to see if that's an option? AMC

I stayed at this hotel just a few years back and we walked up about two blocks (street level front of hotel, walk to the left and take a right at the corner)to get the trolley. Not a long walk at all.

Talk to the hotel. They can probably give you more info. But renting a car is probably a good way to go if you want to go to seaworld too.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. KarenL, that's great news about the nearby trolley!!!! We're leaving tomorrow--can't wait.
