Transportation from San Fran. to San Jose?
 

I am traveling to the Silicon Valley Bowl in San Jose on December 29 to root on my team. The problem is that I am flying into and out of San Fran. and need a way to get to San Jose. I do not plan on renting a car.

What is my best option. Is there any public transportation down that way (Train) or am I stuck taking a taxi. Any idea how much that will set me back?

You take the terminal AirTrain to the BART station, then take BART to Millbrae ($1.50). Transfer to CalTrain to San Jose ($4.25).

Hmmm... You may want to think of how to get from the CalTrain station to the stadium. It's not close.

Right. That's where the taxi enters the equation.
Put $7.00 and some payphone change in your pocket for a cab ride from the station to the stadium.

It looks like a great idea to me! Pretty cheap too! Much cheaper than renting a car for all of my stay. San Jose Dindon stop off the Caltrain, correct?

I have one issue with getting to the airport on the way home. (From San Jose to San Fran). I have a 6 am flight out of San Fran. The earliest train out of San Jose Dindon is at 4:35, not getting me to the Millbrae stop until 5:47, thus, no time to make the flight. What would be the best way to get to the airport (San Fran) at this time in the morning? I have heard a taxi will cost $135. So I am considering renting a car for a day just for the trip up to San Fran. I am under 25 and will get hit with those fees but think the car will still be far under $135. What do you think? Any other way to do this?

Stay overnight at a SFO airport hotel. That's the reasonable way to do it.

Definitely stay near SFO. Staying in Millbrae would be a good choice because the CalTrain stops there. Or you could go all the way back to SFO and take a hotel shuttle to one of the airport hotels.

There is just no reasonable way to get from San Jose to SFO that early in the a.m.

I was thinking of staying in an SFO airport hotel but unfortunely once again the train schedule doesnt work with my crazy schedule to get me there. The last train out is at 10:25 pm and I am thinking the Bowl game will be lasting until then or at least I'll still be celebrating at that time.

Any other ideas, or am I done for..
If I do rent a car, how would the drive be at 3:30 am. Hah, hope there isn't much traffic. Any idea how much time I should leave? Would you think the cab fare would be worth it. Also, would it be worth it to take a cab to a BART station would I could take it to the airport (AirTrain). Those both operate 24 hours, right?

Oh, so you're just going to the game, and come back the next morning? I think I'd just go rent a car, even with the extra fees for <25. Much more flexible, and you can stay overnight anywhere you like and don't have to worry about transportation back to the airport the next morning.

When was the SJ station renamed? I thought it was Diridon, not Dindon?

If you are going to stay in Millbrae, try the Travelodge. There are a couple Travelodge airport locations so make sure you get the Millbrae one. They have a free shuttle from SFO, and are only 1 block or so from the Caltrain/BART station. It isn't fancy but is reasonably priced (was about $65-70 in October). There is a Wendy's Hamburgers right next door and and Albertsons grocery across the street for cheap meals and they have a free continental breakfast but it's pretty sparse (in comparison to other Travelodges).

The drive at 3:30 a.m. is about the only time you'll cut through the territory like a hot knife through butter. Assume the speed limit and give yourself 1:15 to include "getting lost time". It really will take about 42 minutes.

It would seem easier to fly in and out of SJC (America West and Southwest might have decent fares), but if SFO is the best option, you should be able to do one of the "airport shuttle" services - seems like they are about $20 each way. You will probably spend and extra hour collecting/dropping other passengers, but they work.
