Transportation for San Jose airport to SF, $$?
Just found out that hubby's company won't pay for rental car or parking while we're in SF. That's fine, we don't think we'll need a car for anytime but the day we go to Napa. However, they've estimated cost of taxi from San Francisco airport at $40 for a taxi, BUT we are the lone wolfs, and unlike everyone else on this trip, are flying into the San Jose Airport since that is the only direct flight from Austin, and just has the best hours for flying anyway. I imagine we will have to pay out of pocket for anything over the estimated taxi cost from SFO, so can anyone tell me what the cost of a taxi or a shuttle will be from San Jose Airport to downtown San Francisco? (We'll be arriving around 8 pm, so we really want something other then shuttle to SFO or train).
(and even yet, anyone have any shuttle recommendations?)
Thanks!

I think a cab from Mineta/SJ to downtown SF will be very expensive as it is at least a one hour drive; it costs $40 with tip from SFO and that is about 20-25 mins. Sorry have no info on shuttles from SJ to SF, there might be one from SJ to SFO. It might be less expensive (and less of a hassle) to rent a car in SJ and drop it off in SF. Just a thought.

Hi, Branv!
SAB has a great suggestion - rent a car from San Jose Airport and - make sure - there is no dropoff charge for leaving the car in SF. You should be able to drop off the car in midtown SF.
You can then use the car for the day going to Napa and return the car in SF and continue your touring of SF without the car.
If this does not work out schedule-wise, I would suggest taking a shuttle SJ-SF, then take BART (metro, underground, train, whatever you want to call it) from SF Airport into downtown SF. Don't know where you are staying in SF, as this is going to involve dragging your luggage around.
Have a nice trip and welcome to California!

Branv,
A cab to SF from SJC would be about a 1.5 - 2 hr drive and cost at least $120. Ouch!!
You could either take a door to door shuttle or public transportation. BART is not the best option from SJC. I would advise taking the #10 VTA Flyer bus(free) which stops in front of all the terminals, to the Santa Clara Caltrain Station. From there take Caltrain to SF. It will take about 20 minutes to get to the Caltrain atation from the airport and another 1.5 hrs. on the train. The url below is for ground transportation information at SJC.

What day are you arriving? If it's the weekend, Caltrain does not run on weekends. Also, I would not recommend taking BART at night. The shuttle might be the best option. Of course I am not sure when the last shuttles leave SJC for SF.
By the time you get off the plane and get your luggage it will probably be close to 10:00 PM. I would recommend just staying the night in San Jose and going to SF the next day. Downtown SJ is about 5 miles from the airport and you can find plenty of good restaurants in Center City near the hotels.
