Not having a car,is a cab the best way to get to Tulane University,Houston's Restaurant on St. Charles, and Bourbon Street from the Hyatt Regency?

At night, I would take a cab. Or I would request Hyatt courtesy van service.

I do believe that the streetcar goes right past Tulane. Doesn't it? Also, it goes down St. Charles Street so it must go past Houston's restaurant. And it makes a turn right about at Bourbon Street.

Where's the Hyatt?

The Hyatt is attached by pedestrian bridge to the Superdome,New Orleans Shopping Centre, and New Orleans Arena on Poydras in the Central Business District.

From the Hyatt- a cab would be best at night, but walkable to the street car otherwise. Not the best location for French Quarter access- take a cab to/from Bourbon.

I looked up your hotel, and now I know where you are. This is a very nice area that I'd have no qualms myself about staying in, and you should have no problems walking anywhere, day or night (including Bourbon Street, IMHO). The problem you will have is that, although it is cheap, the streetcar is not the quickest way to get around. Tulane is quite aways away from there, so allow yourself plenty of time if you have appointments. I think I remember Houstons -- isn't it in the Garden District? It will not take you as long, like 20 minutes I'd guess, from when you catch the car. It's a pleasant ride but the streetcar comes by only every 15 minutes or so. Tulane is another 10 minutes away by streetcar, I'd guess.

Be forewarned that crime can be vicious in New Orleans -- and the victims are usually tourists who don't realize that the city can change dramatically from one block to the next. So always know where you're going and don't let yourself get into situations that might compromise your safety.

That said, enjoy the city that time forgot.

Do not walk from the Hyatt to Bourbon Street at night. Period. Take the Hyatt shuttle or a cab.

Since the Hyatt shuttle won't go to Houston's or Tulane, I'd take the St. Charles streetcar during the day and a cab at night.

A word of advice: maybe next time you could call your post "Transportation in New Orleans" Just a thought...

Dan is it the walk that's bad? Crossing Canal? Or is it Bourbon Street?

I agree,Tandoori girl. Dan,you always give me good advice,and I always appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post. ANY more info. that you could give would most certainly be appreciated.(you,also,Tandoori girl). I was told by someone who lives in New Orleans that he felt it was safe to walk from The Hyatt if you took Rampart to Canal to Bourbon. I'm putting my money on Dan,however.

The Hyatt isn't in a bad area, but it IS in an area that's quiet at night. I believe the streets in the Central Biz District between the Hyatt and the Quarter can be somewhat spooky at night when not populated. A cab is a safe bet.

Also, it's good to know WHERE you're going when visiting Tulane. The campus is quite large and is composed of 3 distinct sections. If you're visiting the athletic department, for instance, it doesn't make sense to take the streetcar since St. Charles is not near the athletic center.

I'm staying in the Royal St. Charles at 135 St. Charles Ave, which seems like walking distance to the French Quarter. But to get to the City Park to see the Art Museum and the Celebration of the Oaks, is it impossible to walk? Would a cab be the smart way, or is there public transportation?

You definately can't walk to the city park to Celebration in the Oaks from Royal St and I wouldn't take the city bus at night either- spring for one of the bus tours- Greyline offers one- also discount coupons online at the Good Times Guide site. As for the art museum- I am not familar??? During the day the city bus would probably be OK?
