Transfer from Midway airport to Chicago
 

I will be arriving next Sunday in Chicago and have some questions regarding transportation from Midway to N. Dearborn Street.

Do the stations have escalators or stairs. I will be carrying heavy luggage.

Taking the Orange Line which will be my stop for 454 N. Dearborn Streeet? Will I be able to find a taxi or is it walking distance.

Sorry for the sillly questions, but this is my first time in Chicago.

Look at the schedule for the Orange route. When you see the handicapped (wheelchair) icon, you will have elevators. Clark and Lake is a good station, rather near the N.Deaborn address you mentioned. You can get a cab when you exit the station or walk.

Might comment that it is a long walk to the Orange station at Midway. There are some moving sidewalks but if you have a lot of luggage it could be a struggle.

You have several options. As earlier posters have mentioned, it's a bit of a hike from the terminal to the Orange Line station. Just follow the signs through the parking deck.

The apartment is less than a half-mile from the Clark/Lake station. You can catch a cab for only a few dollars.

Another option would be to take the Orange Line to Roosevelt. Head down the escalator (or elevator) and transfer to the Red Line train toward Howard. Exit Grand Avenue, which also has elevators, and walk west on Grand past Bed, Bath and Beyond. Dearborn is the first street, turn right and the entrance to Grand Plaza is in the middle of the block, just past Brazzaz Restaurant.

Thanks so very much for all your replies. Now you have me thinking about the long hike to the Orange Line. I will be carrying a 23 kilo bag and a carry on, besides having a medical condition which does not allow me to lift heavy objects. I'll wait till I get into Chicago and see how well I'm doing after a 10 hour flight.

Whoa !! need to rethink this. That is over 50 lbs. You need to be able to lift your luggage into the train car because of the gap between car and platform. While all of these stations are serviced by escalators and/or elevators, there is always the possibility that they are out of service. The last month the down escalator to the orange platform was not running. And the line for the elevator was long since it would only hold a couple of people with luggage. With those limitation you should probably consider a cab.

I agree that a cab may be your best solution. If you're feeling ok when you land and want to try the Orange Line, ask the station agent if any elevators or escalators you need are out-of-service before you purchase a farecard and board the train. Then, you can make a better decision.
